This is Lava blobs moving up and down maybe little faster in smaller blobs and definitely shinier than the ones I got this summer from this brand/Target... The glossy is a nice variation but NOT the same satin mat Lava wax used in vintage/all Lava L that Ive ever seen. I haven't had problems with the white wax used in the two Tetras/"Falling Blocks" lamps. I've bought about 20 various ones from Target ($ cheaper than anyone) this year decorating multiple houses with these. I've had two shiny wax that start bubbling early and get worse to the point I turn them off after just 4-5 hrs. That said the color wax is different than the white wax this version uses to setoff the three different colors sprayed on the inside of the glass. I like the colors and the overall graphics effects when this is flowing nicely and a little further away than some might keep their lamps. This is much like the video shows IF you're good with that then good. If this is a gift, I do recommend that you’re open the box and check things out. Make sure the lamp bulb is not broken and the base and bent touch or had on a couple of these where they just didn’t pack them right and the plug was right up against the top of the box where the base swells out to its widest to hold the glass. You can carefully bend the "hand spun" aluminum. Buy a couple/5 pack of replacement bulbs off Azon--The latest bulbs have been a bit better than the near crap they were shipping. Best to give/have spares. This is cheap insurance/maintenance gift to them or yourself. skip the insurance-whats to got wrong with the base? 1 easy enough to replace switch. 30yrs and only maintenance I've had to do. Spoiler alert that OCD people may loose the cool effect the designers clearly spent some time developing on this Tetras throwback.... Ok so, this has some non-computer generated coloring effects. Holding true to the throwback feel of Lava Lamps, it helps to think of it as a TV screen or early pixelated LCD displays when U R TOO CLOSE UP to it (like a facinated kid waiting for the lava to melt and get rolling), you'll likely notice the red/orange color becoming little droplets of red)-orange starting on the glass as that color thins to the point that its coating isn't a solid film. The transition is done by a lot of little droplets fading to very few then none as the yellow color takes over. The white wax sets off the red dots on the yellow color pretty clearly and particularly when there's no motion to draw your eyes when it's cold/still. The yellow dots aren't nearly so noticable on the darker blue. Give this time to get baked just like all the other non-glitter LavaL and you'll likely love the new style and apploud this effort to give an old friend more visual tricks. I also recommend the Glitter version if you don't want to wait. I have it on my wifi switch to wake me up as it let's a lot of light pass up and out. And it gets moving quickly drawing my sleepy head to wonder what's moving out there. The other is Scarlet Soundwave that Target carries online. Its black base with red lava reminds me of Darth Vader/Cylons red light on the black background or Night Rider, etc. The base has lines like a vinyl record. nice touch.
