Book Synopsis

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir comes a brilliant, unforgettable, and heart-wrenching contemporary YA novel about family and forgiveness, love and loss, in a sweeping story that crosses generations and continents.

Lahore, Pakistan. Then.
Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Cloud's Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start.

Juniper, California. Now.
Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends; they are family. Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does. Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding.

Now, Sal scrambles to run the family motel as his mother Misbah's health fails and his grieving father loses himself to alcoholism. Noor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle's liquor store while hiding the fact that she's applying to college so she can escape him--and Juniper--forever.

When Sal's attempts to save the motel spiral out of control, he and Noor must ask themselves what friendship is worth--and what it takes to defeat the monsters in their pasts and the ones in their midst.

From one of today's most cherished and bestselling young adult authors comes a breathtaking novel of young love, old regrets, and forgiveness--one that's both tragic and poignant in its tender ferocity.

Sometimes I find myself reading a book that I wouldn’t normally have found myself. A book that, if I heard it described, I wouldn’t even realize that I’d love it. I owe all the credit in the world to BookishFirst for introducing me to this book. I read an excerpt and I was immediately pulled into the story. Unfortunately I didn’t win the book which meant that I had to wait till it was actually released to read it. I’m so glad I found it, it was amazing. If you hear the description and think maybe it’s not for you, read an excerpt somewhere and see if the same thing happens to you. This book was heavy and dealt with some very dark issues that I normally shy away from reading about. But none of them were done in excessive detail and I’m grateful for that. Now, on to the story. Sal (I’m sticking with the shortened version of his name or I’ll have to change it on autocorrect) and Noor met when they were little children. This story tells their story and also Sal’s mother’s story which starts in Pakistan. Sal’s mother has just died. She meant the world to Sal and also to Noor. She loved Noor like she was her own daughter. When she dies, she mentions forgiveness. Noor sees it as asking Noor to forgive Sal after their big fight. They haven’t talked in the past year, Noor immediately allows Sal back into her life and offers him all the support that she can. Sal is in so far over his head. His dad is an alcoholic and they are very close to losing the motel that his mother poured her love into. He’s also upset because his mom might have lived if she’d had the time or money to treat her illness. Noor wants nothing more than to get into a good college very far away and to leave. But her controlling uncle forbids it. She felt indebted to him for so long because he literally saved her life when she was a child in Pakistan. He wound up raising her and blaming her for ruining his life. As Sal and Noor reconnect he makes some decisions that could forever impact the future of both of their lives. I know these are fictional characters but my heart just hurt for them. I so badly wished for happy endings for them. What a story. I’m so glad I read it.

The writing style was so incredibly creative. I'm in complete awe. This is by far one of the best novels I have ever read. I finished this book in 4 days, despite staying up until 2am daily b4cayse I could not and did not want to put it down. Also, this is written for YA, but I'm a 37f and I related all too well to the themes of family, identity, trauma, loss. I'm still thinking about the characters, still feeling the raw emotions captured in this book.

Destroyed me in the best way possible

After I finished reading I was blown away and needed some time to catch up with the waves of emotion that had destroyed me. At first I was actually not sure if I'd be able to read this book because of the dark themes that were mentioned beforehand. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to handle it to be honest, so much is/was happening, that I needed a light hearted read before diving deep into my feels with this book. And then reading another light hearted book after this book so I wouldn't be pulled into a depressive state. So this is a trigger-warning for those that aren't in the mood to read darker themed books. Though my disclaimer might go unheard of I thought to just put that out there. This book is an exceptional, dazzling, and heart-breaking book about family. And whay family's go through; of both tender and despondent of times in ways that are relatable to any family in the world. To say simply, I found this book quite sad and relatable. The cover did a good job of just being there. It really brings your attention to the storyline more.

All My Rage is the story of two Pakistani American teenagers growing up in a small desert town in California. Salahudin and Noor are outsiders and best friends facing incredibly adverse circumstances. The richly developed characters drew me in immediately and I felt that I was right alongside them. All My Rage also includes the story of Salahudin's parents, told in a dual timeline. This book is a beautiful, raw and haunting story of intergenerational and hidden trauma, faith, love, dreams, family, loss, grief, rage, the ugliness of racism, and the persistence of hope. It will leave you gutted, heartbroken and reeling. There are multiple triggers, about which Sabaa Tahir warns the reader. This book is characterized as Young Adult; however, adult readers will find it to be insightful, riveting and thought provoking. All My Rage is clearly one of the best and unforgettable books of 2022.

First of all, I want to say that I read this book in a day, aside from the first look. This book wasn’t always very easy to read, but it was very powerful. Honestly, it made me feel for immigrants and Muslims in a way I’ve never felt before. This book pointed out so many problems within our nation including racism against Muslim people, domestic abuse, drug dealing, and injustice in the court system. Sabaa Tahir’s writing style made the book feel even more emotional than it already was. All throughout the book, I could almost feel Noor, Sal, and Misbah’s pain and it was heartbreaking. Sal was an especially interesting character to me because while he made so bad choices, he also made some very selfless choices that weren’t easy to make. Noor is honestly such an amazing character. She is so incredibly strong and hardworking. I look up to her character so much. Overall, I think the plot of this book is great and I would definitely recommend you to read this book.

This book is a wonderful read. It's deals with some really tough topics - generational trauma, drug abuse, emotional and physical abuse - in an incredibly engaging story about two high school seniors with everything to lose. The less you know in, the more rewarding this will be.

This heartbreakingly beautiful book grabbed me from the start, so much that I was living in the desert with the characters over the two days of reading the book and long afterward. It’s hauntingly real, relatable, and shows the hope that lives in spite of everything, even outright racism and abuse. Tears of sorrow and joy were shed—the emotions were so real! All the feels and all the love for this masterpiece!! Can’t wait to see this gorgeous book on the screen!
