Description

About the Book

After losing her hair to alopecia, librarian Evangeline Kelly decided that she isn't heroine material, so she turns to matchmaking library patrons instead. Tattoo artist Tai Davis uncovers her scheme and strikes a deal for her to go on dates with him in exchange for keeping her secret, but they'll both learn you can't judge a book--or each other--by the cover.

From the Back Cover

Can a librarian's matchmaking mischief lead to a love that rewrites their stories?

If the covers of every romance book ever published didn't convince librarian Evangeline Kelly that she isn't heroine material, her fiancé calling off their wedding when she lost her hair to alopecia did. But what's a girl head over heels for love to do when her feelings are unrequited? Matchmake, that's what. Armed with library patrons' check-out histories, she's determined to make at least one love connection--even if it's not her own.

Tattoo artist Tai Davis is used to people judging him with a single glance, so it doesn't surprise him when the town's quirky new librarian believes his bad-boy reputation without giving him a chance. He can't help being intrigued by her, though, so when he discovers Evangeline's secret matchmaking scheme, he's not above striking a bargain with her. She just has to agree to one date with him for every time she uses his hometown knowledge to set up library patrons on a romantic rendezvous. The deal is made, but in the process, they both might learn you can't judge a book--or each other--by the cover.

"With a uniquely heartfelt message, lovable characters, and laugh-out-loud moments, Sarah Monzon's novel is a delight!"--MELISSA FERGUSON, bestselling author of How to Plot a Payback

This is a sweet he-falls-first, opposites attract, matchmaker romantic comedy with disability representation. Perfect for fans of books about books and kisses-only romances.

I was intrigued to read this story of a matchmaking librarian, and it was even better than I had anticipated! An Overdue Match was such a fun and sweet story, while also having so much depth, feeling, and tenderness. I absolutely loved it! Librarian Evangeline Kelly is an avid romance reader, and she’s convinced she’s not heroine material. Her fiancé calling off their wedding when she lost her hair to alopecia makes her even more certain of that. Evangeline is a lover of love, and might not be interested in the experience for herself, but she’s happy to play matchmaker for others. Tai Davis is a tattoo artist and is used to being judged by his appearance. He’s immediately attracted to the town's quirky librarian, but she’s not giving him a chance. In spite of her lack of interest, he’s intrigued and is in relentless pursuit of her. When he discovers Evangeline's secret matchmaking scheme, he strikes a bargain with her. She’ll go on one date with him for every time she uses his knowledge of the locals to set up library patrons on a romantic rendezvous. In the process of this, they get to know each other on a deeper level, and learn that making assumptions based on appearances can be misleading. This is one of those stories that when I finished, I had to to hug it to my chest. I loved all the book and character references, and how vibrantly Evangeline’s love and passion for books shines through. Tai grew up with asthma and health issues, and was held back by intense anxiety. I loved how he had learned to let that fear go, and was patiently trying to help Evangeline do the same thing. I loved her realizing that she had forgotten who she was by letting the perception of others distort her self-image, and then gained that identity back. An Overdue Match is sweet, funny, poignant, and utterly charming. It’s a beautiful example of the power of books to entertain, broaden your perspective, and increase your understanding and empathy for people who have completely different life experiences than you do. It was easily a 5 star read for me. I received a digital copy from Baker Publishing and Bethany House Fiction via NetGalley, but a positive review was not required. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

After being diagnosed with alopecia and dumped by her ex fiancé, librarian Evangeline Kelly has given up on her own love life, but that doesn’t mean she’s giving up on the love lives of those in her small town of Little Creek. When Tai Davis, a tattoo artist with a bit of a reputation, catches Evangeline unsuccessfully matchmaking people based on their reading histories, he makes a deal with her - he’ll give her valuable information on the local townsfolk she’s matchmaking if she’ll go out with him. Thinking that no one could ever truly love her, Evangeline does her best to extinguish Tai’s interest, but the more she gets to know him, the harder it is to push him away.📚 This was my first @sarahmonzonwrites read, and it was SO adorable! I love a good bookish heroine, and Tai was such a charming, flirty hero that he had *me* swooning. This story has a great balance of humor and emotion, and I appreciated its faith thread and emphasis that God loves us unconditionally, even when those in our lives don’t. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a fun, sweet romance, and I’m looking forward to Sarah’s next book in the series!💜 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A big thank you to @bethanyhousefiction for sending me a copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions above are my own.📔

This one is a book-lover’s dream! Quotes and references to novels galore (I mean, it IS about a librarian who is attempting to matchmake based on library checkout history…), this story is a love-letter to bibliophiles everywhere. Evangeline is a very real and relatable character. Her struggle for acceptance and the lesson she must learn in embracing her own authenticity is such a relevant and, I’m sure, often overlooked undercurrent in the lives of many, however they may have ended up relegating themselves to that position. I definitely felt the emotional and heartfelt reasons behind the personification that Evangeline had adopted. Enter Tai Davis. Multilayered perfection of a misjudged and misunderstood hero, he is precisely the catalyst that our heroine needs to begin her growth journey. Having learned to embrace a different way of living, he understands Evangeline’s conundrum, and is now left with the very simple task (insert snort of derision) of wrangling a romance-obsessed librarian, who’s written off the possibility of her own love-story, into giving him the time of day. Many outbursts of laughter, swipes at tears and foolish grins of happiness later, and I closed this book on a very contented sigh. Already I’m DYING for the next book in Author Sarah Monzon’s Checking Out Love series. I cannot WAIT to see what’s in store for our next librarian! (And based on that sneak-peek at the end, I’m not going to be disappointed!) This is the first novel I’ve read by Ms. Monzon, but I am already now eyeing some others by her to pick up. An Overdue Match was spot-on in its mixture of humor, romance and learning moments. Emotional depth with a side-twist of fun, I enjoyed this book a lot! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Heart-melting Inspirational Romance!

OMG! I don’t have words to express how much I loved this book! Being a book lover, I always love books where the heroine is a librarian or a book lover. I was kind of uncertain about the hero being a tatoo artist. I don’t have anything against tattoos, I even admire them, but I don’t know, it was the first time I read about this kind of hero and I was curious about how it would turn out! Well, let me tell you that Tai is my new book boyfriend. I loved him that much! Loved the plot: a matchmaking librarian who has deep self-esteem issues because of her alopecia, an illness which provoked the absolute loss of her hair. She’s restarting her life in a new town after being pitied by everyone, and being humiliatingly rejected by her fiancée because of the loss of attraction her baldness caused. A tattoo artist that has finally stepped out of his cocoon and chased his dreams after being limited and overprotected by his overbearing mother who wouldn’t let him do anything risky because of his asthma. It was an original type of opposites-attract, enemies to lovers, and forced proximity trope for me, and I loved it. The part that completely melted my heart was the characters: Evangeline and Tai. I struggled and related -in some ways- to Evangeline’s low self-esteem. I understood her completely. Being a people pleaser always makes you focus more on your exterior image than on what is really important. Your heart. The heart that only certain kind of people can value in its real worthiness, and that only God can understand in its totality and love unconditionally. The journey Evangeline has to make to discover this, is humbling and inspiring, and I enjoyed watching her resilience and courage emerge. And Tai has the most important part in helping her achieve it. That’s why I fell so deeply in love with Tai, because he reminded me of God’s unconditional love. The way he falls for Evangeline from the start is endearing. The meet-cute -orchestrated by Haley- at the library was fun and lighthearted. The way Tai fights for Evangeline’s love and attention is swooning. He’ll do anything for her, literally anything, even kind of blackmailing her (which was a sweet blackmail really). He loves her for being her. He discovers her flaws and loves her all the more for it. This filled my heart and made me wish there were so many Tai’s out there, loving their soulmate in that unconditional way. Plus, he was patient and didn’t take a no for an answer, he persevered with kindness and gentleness. So, as you can guess, the romance was super swooning, even if it was slow-burn, and the wait was so much worth it. The kissing scene, sigh! The bookish quirks from Evangeline, and even from Tai were delightful. And Evangeline matchmaking attempts, so fun. I also loved Hayley as a secondary character. Their unique friendship and the way she made amends for her mistake is beautiful too. Another particular thing about this book. It made me cry. I never expected that! But I did it with all my heart. A kind of bittersweet-happy cry. More sweet and happy than anything. Oh, if you haven’t read this book, please go buy it now! You won’t regret it, I promise! And you’ll thank me later! Can’t wait for the second book in the Checking Out Love Series! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Bethany House Publishers and was under no obligation to post a review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

"Despite my defensive responses and futile attempts at vilifying him, Tai Davis has managed to breach the protective layer I've tried to erect around my heart. Leather-wearing, fast-car-driving, tattooed, Granny-would-have-a-heart-attack-if-she-knew Tai Davis." Move over book boyfriends, there's a new one in town and he is absolute perfection. I'm a little in love with Tai Davis and I'm not mad about it! The way he loved Evangeline in this book was the definition of steadfast and enduring affection. I cried so many times! As someone who deals with chronic illness, I could relate to how Evangeline felt unworthy of love. It was so heartbreaking to read about and Sarah did it beautifully. I especially enjoyed the themes of faith woven into the story. God's love was on full display throughout the pages without any cliches or sugarcoating. 5/5 stars Read if you enjoy: Fake Dating(ish) MMCs with tattoos Grumpy Sunshine Small Town Romance Chronic Illness Rep. *I received a complimentary copy. Sweet, Fun, Delightful Story!

I love reading stories about libraries and all things bookish. If you do, too, then this is one book you won’t want to miss. It’s also a tender, beautiful story of one woman’s struggle with a physical issue that changed her life and made her doubt she’d ever experience love. Evangeline never thought she would ever be the heroine of her own story, but then she meets her “hero.” And if I ever wanted to be in a story and have a hero, I’d wish for Tai to be mine! Even though he initially seemed to be a rake, rouge, and bad boy, what is seen on the outside isn’t really what’s on the inside. This book had so much packed into it. There were lots of fun times and also some very deep, tender moments. The author knows how to draw out all the emotions of a reader. After reading this book, I needed to wait and let it sit in my brain and heart. It was a sweet picture of tender love and acceptance. Sarah Monzon has given us another delightful and deeply moving story. She is a skilled storyteller who uses colorful images and events to tell her stories. This story was full of fun, laughter, and a bit of romance. It also weaves in a lesson to help us realize that we are beautiful just the way God made us. The author provided me with a copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own. I highly recommend it.

Funny, heartfelt and swoony moments!

This is the sweetest RomCom with the most heartfelt moments! It has everything I love: books, treating books respectfully, references to books, a library, a librarian, and a cat. You, too? There is also kindness, snark, family, and even true crime! This book is hilariously funny, yet I cried several times because I felt so much empathy for the FMC. The characters are so real to me, and I love how they handled struggles, weaknesses and conflict with love and grace. The bad-boy-turned-hero is so kind and swoony, and I just wanted to hug the support cast (aka family and friends)! Excited to see this is the first in a series! Highly recommended!
