Q: Can you bottom up water these?

submitted by Lolo - 1 month ago
  • A: Hi Lolo! While bottom watering is beneficial for seedlings, our peat-free plantable seed starting pots are not recommended to bottom water. Biodegradable pots are designed to absorb water quickly, and are prone to becoming soggy and waterlogged, which can potentially lead to fungal issues. It's best to top-water when using our seed starting pots. Please don't hesitate to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com or give us a call at 510-922-9758 with any questions or concerns—we're here to help you grow!

submitted by Potential Potted Planter - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi CQ! A little mold is not uncommon. Please send a photo to contact@backtotheroots.com, and we'd be happy to help you grow.

Egg cartons have more structure!

These individual seed pots are a great way to start seedlings. Unfortunately, the Back To The Roots pots are more delicate than other name brands once filled with soil, seeds, and particularly: watered. The photos show the Back to the Roots pots on the right, compared to another brand after being watered. The BTTR pots lack more fibrous rigidity; cardboard egg cartons have more structure than these pots! If you plan to move your peat pots around frequently as I do for watering and then to harden off the seedlings, I’d suggest getting another brand. The BTTR pots are already feeling like they are disintegrating which is super disappointing as the seedlings haven’t yet sprouted. I am already planning to repot them in a bigger peat pot - not this brand! - which is just a loss of my money. I’m glad I picked this up on sale. I wouldn’t repurchase.

There is zero drainage in these so they turn into little mud cups when you water. They also mold like crazy. I’ve never seen anything like it. Zero percent chance I’d buy them again.

The size is great for starting seeds. I love being able to write on them, then I can put them straight in the ground. My only complaint is they are VERY difficult to separate.

Seeds didn't grow yet while they grew in our containers. I planted tomato seeds and there's nothing. It usually takes them 7-10 days to sprout but not in those containers! It has been 10 days and I got zero tomato seedlings. Tried other plants and they haven't sprouted yet. I tried another, ceramic, container and I got a seedling in 7 days. These pots make the soil dry out very quickly, have to water every day.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got these as soon as spring started to start some potted plants I just got. I must admit I was skeptical these would work since I have a black thumb (was gifted a cactus and it died). However I am amazed how well these have started up my pots and super happy with them!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have raised bed to grow vegetables and these plantable seed starting pots are so handy. I can start my seeds and then plant these directly into the garden! How convenient. I love that this is an earth friendly product as that is my goal in growing my own vegetables. When you buy transplants vs seeds, they come in a plastic container. This feels like such a better way to go. I also like that they are individual vs connected to each other making it easier to share and sort your seedlings. In addition, this is a great way to save money as seeds are much more affordable than transplants. I highly recommend these to any gardener.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My son has just loved helping establish our garden this year. He checked our starting pots everyday for sprouts and was obsessed with caring for our plants. It was so easy to use these starter plants- they came apart easily and held their shape as we scooped the soil and planted each seed. These were extremely breathable and drain super easily to avoid root rot. By far the best part about these starter pots is that you can plant them directly into the garden after the seeds start to sprout. It was so easy to just cut the bottoms off without repotting and disturbing our fragile roots. Compared to plastic pots, these are so much more convenient and environmentally friendly. I will use these every year!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love these Organic and plantable see starting pots by Back to the roots. You get 24 in one pack and these are easy to use and go into the ground as it is just by cutting the bottom after exposing the roots. So no more plastic waste after you replant your seedlings. They worked great for our herb garden. we will use them every year!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I do quite a bit of gardening every year and my nephews absolutely love helping me. I found that this is the perfect little project for them to grow their very own plants. Buy a pack of seeds, some soil, and help them assemble in these mini pots… super easy. The best part about these though, is that you can plant them directly in the ground once the seeds start to sprout. My nephews love the transfer into the ground just as much as they love planting the seeds! These are so easy, convenient, and most importantly so much fun!! They would also be great to start a variety of herbs! Can’t recommend enough
