Q: Is this soil appropriate for container growing magnolia tree, olive tree and fiddle leaf fig?

submitted by Na - 11 months ago
  • A: Hi there! Our potting mix should be good to use for olive trees and fiddle leaf fig trees, but you'll likely want a more acidic, loamy mix for a magnolia tree. Feel free to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with questions!

Q: How can the reviews be so good when all my plants are doing poorly in this soil? I grow flowers and veggies every year with great success but not with this soil a complete failure.

submitted by Elisa - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Elisa! We are sorry to hear your plants are not thriving, but we are here to help. Please email us photos of your plants to contact@backtotheroots.com, we are here to help you grow. Have you given your plants any fertilizer?

Q: Is this soil vegan? No animal products? Thanks.

submitted by Mellow - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi Mellow! Our soils are not vegan, we use poultry litter, crab meal, and feather meal in our soils. Our plant foods are vegan, though, from our all-purpose, our edibles, and our indoor plant food for houseplants.

Q: what kind of "food" and "fertilizer" is in this soil? what ingredient is imported?

1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 7 months ago
Hi LB! We are sorry to hear you're having trouble with fungus gnats. Fungus gnats are attracted to the decaying organic matter in organic potting mixes that are moist. Please send a photo of the front and back of your bag to contact@backtotheroots.com, we would love to help you grow in our soils.

I bought this mix to refill my pots for spring. My first impression was that it seemed a little mulch-y, but figured it would be fine as I'm not growing anything too involved on my apartment balcony. I am severely disappointed by the drainage of this soil. We did, admittedly, get a pretty intense rainstorm a couple weeks ago, but no matter what I seem to do this mix is holding onto water like nothing I've ever seen. I am honestly shocked, and this is not my first year of container gardening! Maybe if we didn't get the downpour it'd be holding up better, but certainly not an ideal choice for my needs.

Worst potting soil I’ve used! I now have mushrooms growing in all my plants and something in the mix attracts small bugs. It’s horrible.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 8 months ago
Hi JenP! The mushrooms in your soil are a sign that your soil is biologically alive and healthy, but it can be a sign that the soil is too moist and the humidity is high. Please reach out with photos to contact@backtotheroots.com. We would love to help you grow in our soils!

I left it in the box for a couple weeks, just in case, thinking anything inside would die. Instead wokeup to a house full of gnats and realized they were coming out of the box. Taped the box so they couldn't get out and within less than an hour this is what one part of the box looked like. Every crack in the box looked like this. Target refunded but still a hassle to get rid of all the gnats and used half a roll of tape. (I live in an apartment building where you leave your trash in a trash room and I didn't want to infest the building so I kept it till trash day).

I was super excited for this organic soil for repotting more than a dozen indoor plants, but it came with so many fungus gnats! I have them all over my house now, swarming all the plants I repotted and am spending MORE money now on flying insect traps and time on treating each plant. One pot even started growing mushrooms. I'll keep the remainder for outdoor plants, but will not be using this again for anything indoor.

This potting soil is full of wood pieces and decaying matter. In just 1-2 days of filling the pots, the soil settled in with wood pieces left at the top. There were also so many flies and gnats that I can't get rid of now. This soil is full of decaying matter, gnat larvae and the soil is not well draining.

I'm kinda blown away by how bad this soil is. I've bought $4 topsoil with a higher quality level. The bag is half wood chips, which would be fine for a cheap, non-potting soul. But I also pulled out pieces of rubber and a huge sheet of material. These additions also make me doubt the organic status of the soil, as they're probably full of chemicals that leach into the product.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 11 months ago
