Description

Black Girl Sunscreen for Kids is an everyday SPF 50 moisturizing sunscreen lotion for the face and body. Our FDA-approved sunscreen protects against harmful UVA/UVB rays and has eliminated all white residue. Soothes, moisturizes, protects, hydrates and heals your child's skin. Water resistant for 80 minutes. No fragrance. No Parabens. No silicones. No aluminum. Oxybenzone and octinoxate free means your child's broad spectrum sunscreen is environmentally friendly.

Our story begins with the need for a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to women of color.

From carrying expensive umbrellas to the beach to avoiding the sunshine altogether, women of color have come up with their own methods of protecting their skin. For years, sunscreen has been tailored to light-skinned individuals, leaving behind a visible white residue on our darker-skinned sisters. Blotchy makeup and white residue were enough to keep people from truly enjoying a beautiful sunny day. Our founder thought it was about time to change that.

In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white cast.

Today, Black Girl Sunscreen is making moves! Black Girl Sunscreen has grown exponentially because of you. The goal of BGS is to start the conversation globally around sun safety to educate and protect melanin beauties worldwide. Now with four products, we’re saying Black does crack and it’s in our power to protect it.

Q: Can this be used for colored 11-year-olds with oily skin?

submitted by Naula Isa - 5 years ago
  • A: Homosalate is a chemical sunscreen and is recommended to be avoided by pregnant women and CHILDREN due to its harmful effects . SMH this has 15% homosalate. Do better.

submitted byDo your Research - 11 months ago
  • A: a colored 11 year old?

submitted byIzzy - 5 years ago
  • A: If you mean POC yes...colored should not be a word used to describe melaninated skin.

submitted byJada - 4 years ago
  • A: Guys, Naula Isa is a Spanish name. It's also common in South America. These countries never had Jim Crow. The term "colored" is not offensive as it is in America. It just means brown or dark olive complexion. She just wants to know if she can use this on her daughter.

submitted byTruthInAdvertising - 4 years ago
  • A: Why has this not been deleted

submitted byJM - 8 months ago
  • A: We are unsure of what "colored 11-year-old" means. However, BGS Kids SPF 50 can be used on melaninated skin ages 6 months and older.

submitted by Cheryl - 10 months ago
  • A: Hi Cheryl! You'll find that the formula is very moisturizing as well, yes. Thank you for your interest.

Q: Is black girl sunscreen good for kids/adults with eczema? Has anyone with eczema ever used it? Thank you.

submitted by Ymayancela - 11 months ago
  • A: My daughter with eczema had a few bumps on the face after we used this, so do a patch test to be sure. It worked well for everyone else in the family so consider buying 2 brands of sunscreen

  • A: Hi there! Yes, this product is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. Thank you.

My son is Asian and Black. I wanted to love this product for my son because other sunscreens leave a white cast/film, but unfortunately it's not meant for his skin. We tried this when he was 7 or 8 months, and he had hives, but I thought it was because he was too young to have products on him. We tried again this past weekend (now 11 months) and at first it was fine. But later in the day it worsened. Hives all down his back and on his forehead. I would recommend a patch test before doing the whole body.

Darn! I'm looking for a daily face sunscreen that doesn't break the bank and I thought this would be it. It has excellent reviews, and I do think it is a great sunscreen - just not for face daily, atleast for me because of the light sunscreen smell. I'll be saving this baddy for hiking trips and/or shower days. I'm not particular sensitive to smells, but it was still just too sunscreen smelly for me. It deffinitely is not as pungent as typical sunscreens are atleast. Does go on clearly once rubbed in well, and leaves a hint of greasy, somewhat hydrated feel, even after an hour.

I like that this product penetrates the skin and doesn’t leave a white cast. I make this a daily routine for my little one. We are in the early stages of her learning about skincare and the importance of using SPF as part of her daily routine.

This is an excellent chemical sunscreen for the face and body, even for sensitive skin folks. I love how quickly it absorbs into my skin and how it doesn't sting my eyes at all. The price is very reasonable for such a well-made formula.

A million times YES! Both my kiddo and I use this particular sunscreen and it’s easily the best I’ve ever bought. It’s hydrating, gentle, doesn’t sting your eyes if you sweat while you play in the sun, and beyond easy to reapply/rub in. My only gripe if there was to be one is I wish it came in a bigger tube so I wouldn’t have to restock as often as I do. Other than that, it’s a staple in our home ❤️

I've bought about 5 tubes of this so far and never had a problem. My eldest daughter likes to layer this under her makeup because it's not greasy and doesn't leave a white cast. However, today I applied this to my 7 month old, and she broke out in red rashes. (The picture is after I had washed her face and her rashes were calming down already) All my other kids use this sunscreen with no issues, so I guess it just depends on your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, I would probably pass on this.

I have run through several tubes of this sunscreen! The formula is so light and it smells pleasant. Little to no white cast and I use it on my body. Has never let me down for a long outing or a beach trip. I do prefer a much lighter, less greasy, watery formula for my face so I use a different sunscreen for my face.

This is my favorite sunscreen, I refuse to use anything else (besides the spray version of the same thing). I buy several at a time so that I never run out and can apply liberally. I apply this as a base in the morning/before I get dressed, and then reapply with the spray throughout the day. I don’t use it on my face usually, but I have before and it works great. There is no white cast at all! (I have medium tan skin that gets even darker in the summer, so if there was a cast you’d see it for sure.) My only tiny complaint is that it’s slightly oily; I think this is impossible to avoid with sunscreen so it’s not really an issue and doesn’t stop me from using it. I just notice smudges in my car or on my desk if I lean my arms after using this sunscreen. It’s nothing crazy and is easy to wipe away when you clean.
