Q: Will this work well in a cold water wash?

A: yes. Charlie's Soap works best from water that is around 55 degrees F to 120 degrees F. 55 is very cold to the touch. In the winter, ground water can dip below that and affect solubility, so try to avoid "tap cold" or just "cold" in the coldest of winter. To avoid problems, use warm or the "cool" cycle during those cold months. Otherwise, cold should be just fine.

You must not use too much and add it directly to the drum (not the dispenser) for HE machines. In other words, follow the directions. If added to the dispenser or if you add too much (or simply your load is very small) you will end up with that nasty residue which will also make you itch all over.

Yeah, most of those dispensers were made for dense products that roll down the chute undissolved and undissolving. As soon as the jet of water hits Our Powder in the dispenser, it splashes it to the sides where it dries, untouched by water. Not much ends up going down the chute, and you don't get the clean you're looking for.

For years I have purchased the liquid laudry detergent, and unfortunately Target has not carried it for a while so I had to purchase it elsewhere. However, I saw that they carry the laundry powder, and wanted to try it since it was a great sale price. I have not noticed a difference between the powder and liquid in terms of the quality of the wash (which always seems to be great!), but I really like that the powder comes with a scoop so I know I am not adding too much or too little powder. I did notice that at first some powder would gather in the agitator of my top loader, but that was because I was putting the powder ontop of my laundry. Ever since I started putting it in first, with my laundry on top, I have not had this issue.
My clothes/bedding are much softer using Nellie's Laundry Powder

Charlie's cleans fine. But it tended to leave a ultra-fine powder/grit on my clothes, towels, & bedding: 1. Even with 2-3 additional rinse cycles. 2. Using Vinegar in the rinse cycle. 3. Using less than the recommended amount in HE washer. The Nellie's Laundry powder leaves no powedry-residue, and all my clothes, towels & bedding are much softer on my skin... and I don't have to do additional rinses & vinegar.

Cleans better than anything else I’ve ever tried, including luxury brands. Love that it’s unscented, love the powder for environmental friendliness and travel! It even handles permastanky synthetics, although I do add OxyClean powder for those too. Do add it directly to the drum, not in the dispenser.

It bleached some dark clothing. I followed the directions. It now basically looks like the dark shirts were lightly tie dyed. It also left a sandy residue in my washer AND dryer. Like I said I followed the directions. Will be returning.

Howdy. As Charlie's Soap is pulling old residues out of your clothes and your washer, sometimes detergents laden with brighteners can temporarily redeposit. This can make things look a bit weird. It is normal to see, smell, feel every version of every detergent you've ever used as it comes out of your clothes. I would suggest washing the affected garment another 2 or 3 times with a double dose to full detox it. Give us a call. We may have some further suggestions based on your situation.

This is the best fragrance free detergent that I've found. The bag lasts a long time- one scoop per load in my he washing machine. I use a little vinegar as a fabric softener, and the 2 work well together. Definitely recommend

I wanted to like this soap. It’s natural and supposed to be good for the environment. But it doesn’t rinse out. I always have to do a 2 rinse cycle and even then there’s chalked on soap on my clothes so I have to wash them again. So I’m literally using up more water because this soap is horrible. I have a whole bag so I don’t want to waste it. But I can’t wait till it’s all gone and I can get something else. The company needs to invent a formula that dissolves the soap

Give us a call at the number on the bag. Something is screwy. The amount needed for a FULL load of clothes will completely dissolve in 10 oz of water. If you're getting flakes and cakes, there are a few things that could be causing that. 1) It COULD be old detergent coming out of the clothes. This can cause a similar experience, and it takes a few washes to get it out. 2) It could be that the washer is overloaded? Add the detergent to the drum first, and then load the washer nominally to provide for agitation. 3) It also could be hard water residue. The washing soda in our product attempts to remove calcium in the water by forming limestone precipitate. Normally, this isn't a problem, but in extreme cases, the water is so hard that the fix is almost as bad as the problem. Our booster gets calcium out of the way in a different way without causing scale. Give us a call, so we can talk through your options. We want you to be happy!

Love Charlie's soap! You do have to use water 55°F or hotter (cool setting to hot) for this soap to work properly. This can result in needing to presoak items with rough stains. We use this soap for our cloth diapers. Out of all the products we have used, this is the only one that gets cloth diapers CLEAN in one wash. No residue, no loss of absorbancy, and best of all NO SMELL! 100% Recommend this product!

I love that this is good for the environment and my washing machine, is unscented so good for my sensitive skin, and is technically a cheaper option than liquid detergent since it lasts longer. You don’t need much per load to get a good clean. I was worried the powder wouldn’t dissolve in the washing machine since I always wash in cold water but it works great. I’ll be always using this from now on!

Appreciate this extra-large size as it means less-frequent orders and a slightly reduced price. Happy to find a laundry detergent with non-toxic ingredients, and no unnecessary ingredients like fragrances. This one is powder. So when I add the powder to my laundry in the washer, I would also use a measuring cup to pour water over the powder to make sure powder does not remain on clothing. Personally I do not mind doing this extra step. I like the ingredients in this product and do this extra step to make sure it works for me.

I have Been using this for years. The larger bag lasts so long, and I do 1-3 loads of laundry daily! Only need to add 1 tbsp directly into the washer. Clothes come out clean. The only issue I have is oil stains on dark clothes don’t always come out and need a second wash (but I also wash in cold water) I love that it is not scented.

Thanks for your review. Oil stains are some of the most stubborn and sometimes can need a little extra attention. We recommend our Pre-Spray Stain Remover for the most stubborn of those. Just spray on as soon as you notice the stain and wash with your next load as normal. But without it, make a small amount of paste with a sprinkle of powder and water and scrub the mixture in before tossing it in the wash.
