The device is excellent but has an annoying issue.

I have been using the ScanSnap SV600, and it is an excellent device that performs all tasks efficiently. However, I am encountering an issue during the scanning process. A glitch occurs where the scanner exceeds the boundaries of the book or magazine, capturing the black mat and producing a distorted image. There seems to be no apparent reason for this issue. I live in Egypt, but unfortunately, there is no available technical support for this device in my country. Is there any way to contact the technical support team to resolve this problem?

Hardware fine; Software lacking

I purchased this with the intention of scanning books. After two months, I have yet to successfully scan a book. The scan is fine, but the ScanSnap Home software does not split the pages, so one image contains two pages. I wish there was a more robust third-party software option available for the scanner. The fingertip removal software works fine except you need to edit each individual page which gets a little tedious. Hopefully, Ricoh will make some improvements to the software so books can be scanned with each page as a separate image.

Since this scanner doesn't touch the paper, it needs hardly any maintenance! The flexibility of the software makes this scanner invaluable, from the multi-doc auto-crop to the fingertip removal;-) My favorite feature is setting it to scan continuously a second after its last scan- you can get through a nice sized book in minutes!

I use the ScanSnap to create pdfs and jpegs of large scrapbooks, photobooks, etc. and individual photos. The quality is excellent and learning to use the device has been relatively easy. (One caveat: If the page or photo being scanned has some thickness, the edges of the electronic file may be slightly curved.) I frequently use the flattening feature. An excellent product that is invaluable for archiving and preserving my records.

My experience with the ScanSnap has been excellent. I have been able to archive oversize music manuscript pages. If I then want to print the pages, I can use 8.5x11, as the images are saved in a PDF format. The flattening of the page application helps when the originals are old, torn, tattered, and especially worn-out. Having the abilty to save in the PDF format, helps when prinetd scans become written on, torn, lost, or otherwise unable to read.

Without the wireless capability everyone cannot use it at their workplace in a home office. With limited space and no desire to have wires all over the office, wireless is a great benefit.

Plus: good resolution, easy to set up and use, batch…

Plus: good resolution, easy to set up and use, batch OCR, nice correction of distortion and thumb removal tool when doing fewer books Could use improvement: Batch correction, straight cropping, batch thumb removal We have been very happy with the performance of our ScanSnap SV600. We purchased it to scan laboratory notebooks for archival purposes. While the distortion correction process is relatively good, it's too time-consuming to use it when we're scanning hundreds of books. It would be helpful if the correction could be done in a batch mode. However, the primary purpose of this scanning is to create an electronic file that contains both text and high-resolution figures to preserve and back up the data in the notebooks, and the scanner works very well for this. We were able to scan over 400 notebooks at a fraction of what it would have cost to send them out for that service, with better results. The batch mode for the OCR is very helpful, too, as you can scan a number of books, then set it up to run OCR on all of them at once. For lower throughput jobs, the book distortion correction and thumb removal tools are quite handy. It would be helpful to be able to simply crop the images, preferable in a batch mode, without the program automatically trying to ""correct"" book distortion, which can introduce distortion as it tries to identify the page edges. Perhaps a toggle to enable/disable the automatic page edge prediction. For some larger books, we had to add some height to the scanner (sat it on a catalog) do this. Also the stabilizing clips are cludgy, and we didn't use them. Perhaps a better fix to improve stability, like extendable tabs that could go under the scanning area.

This scanner has been a great asset to our museum! We are able to quickly scan photographs and books and create searchable pdf files for visitor research of our local history. The only improvement would be to add a way to disable the automatic edge detection and allow the user to pick a point to point straight line while picking book corners and middle of book during correction.

Incredible Clarity/Document Protection

As a historian and ephemera collector, it is imperative that I not damage the papers I am working with. Many of the documents I deal with are literally hundreds of years old and need to be handled carefully. The SV600 makes it easy to care for and protect these valuable documents while creating a digital archive that is clear, clean, and easy to read, all while not touching the document at all. A real document and time saver.

Great but not Perfect

The ScanSnap SV600 Contactless Scanner is quick and efficient and certainly a major step up over flatbed scanning. In the short time I have had the SV600 I have used it for thousands of high quality scans. The only issue I have is that the borders of the scans crop into the design of the items being scanned. This can be manually remedied with the software yet it takes time. Not very much time mind you yet when were talking about thousands of business related scans it adds up. If the software could be set to create a defined 1-2mm black border around each item it would more than double my speed and I would consider this the perfect product.
