Q: 2 Years ago someone some stated that a "plastic" smell was emitted from this humidifier. Does this unit, now in 2022, still emit a bad smell when running?

submitted by BJGA4 - 3 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. Occasionally, new units can have a "plastic" smell from the plastic that the units come wrapped in. If you place the humidifier into a well ventilated area for a few hours, this will allow the smell to dissipate. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact our consumer relations team by emailing us at SocialSupport@helenoftroy.com. Thank you.

  • A: mine had it for a few cycles then stopped . It wasnt terrible, obviously not pleasant but not a deal breaker . I dont like to smell chemicals but for the limited time it did it i felt like it was ok

submitted bytb - 2 years ago
  • A: I just received my unit yesterday and can confirm that it does have an absolutely terrible stench. It was so bad that my roommate down the hall started yelling in disgust and asking what that smell was. I took it outside today and ran it on high for a couple hours but that did not help. I just put it back outside to run for longer, if I remember I will come back with an update.

submitted byRyan - 3 years ago

Q: I just bought one of these today. When I started running it, the humidifier put a "plastic like" smell into the room. Will it continue to do this or is this something that should go away with continued use?

submitted by PS - 5 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. Sometimes a new unit can have a plastic smell from the packaging. We would advise airing the unit out for a few hours in a well ventilated area and this should get rid of the smell. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact our consumer relations team by emailing us at SocialSupport@HelenofTroy.com. Thank you.

  • A: Mine has continued to emit the smell, which is no doubt toxic, and I would recommend against purchasing this humidifier. They told me to run it for 12 to 24 hours straight on high power, which I had already done (I've had it a little more than a week) but did so again, and it didn't clear up the problem as they said it would. Absolutely unacceptable and probably dangerous to your health.

submitted byWillE - 4 years ago
  • A: I wish I would have read these before I purchased it. I have been running mine for weeks now and the horrible chemical plastic stench will not go away. It angers me to see the reply about it being the plastic that it is wrapped in and don't want anyone to be fooled by it. The smell is coming from the unit itself and it's obvious. I took it apart and washed it and it did nothing. I'm very angry as I've always bought Honeywell and now I have to find a new humidifier brand.

    submitted bySassy9609 - 3 years ago

Q: When I look up this humidifier on the Honeywell site, it says it’s compatible with use of the protec cleaning balls. But a tech support person answered someone else’s question below saying they were not compatible. Which is it?

submitted by VLM - 4 months ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry! The Protec cleaning cartridge is designed for use with cool mist humidifiers, so it is not a recommended accessory for the Honeywell HWM845 Warm Mist Humidifier. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. For further assistance, please feel free to contact us at SocialSupport@helenoftroy.com. We're here to help!

Q: What is the size of the tank?

submitted by Me - 3 years ago
  • A: This tank is a little bit smaller than one gallon. It is maybe 9/10 of a gallon. I tried 3 times to fill it from a one gallon bottle of water, and 1 gallon of water never fit in this tank.

submitted bydn - 3 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. This humidifier holds 1 gallon in the water tank. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact our consumer relations team by emailing us at SocialSupport@helenoftroy.com. Thank you.

Q: what type of water do you use

submitted by region - 4 years ago
  • A: If you use distilled water, it will not work at all. It BOILS the water and it gets very hot, so my whole house smelled like chlorine. I loved this machine except for that, and returned it.

submitted bydn - 3 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. You can use regular tap water with this unit. You can also use, or mix in, distilled water to reduce the mineral content of the water. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact our consumer relations team by emailing us at SocialSupport@helenoftroy.com. Thank you.

Q: Can this be refilled from the top with a pitcher or do you have to pull off the whole container and turn upside down to fill it?

submitted by OurMedGuide - 6 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. This is not a top fill model. You must remove the tank from the unit in order to fill it. We hope this is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We can be reached by emailing SocialSupport@kaz.com. Thank you.

  • A: You must pull it off and turn it upside down to fill it. However, it has a great built in handle, very large easy open cap, and holds less than 1 gallon of water. So I found it very easy to fill.

Q: Hi , can we not descale this unit? What happens if we don’t descale? Thank you

submitted by Hsing - 2 months ago
  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. Regular descaling of the Honeywell HWM845 Humidifier is important to maintain optimal performance. Without cleaning, mineral buildup can affect mist output over time. We recommend cleaning the humidifier weekly for the best results. If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact our team at SocialSupport@helenoftroy.com.

Q: How can I clean this? When I put it away for the season and come back, it has a nasty orange film on it.

Works well for the price, I've had no issues so far. Helped me out a great bit in the winter months, it had a plastic smell the first couple times I used to so I washed it out before using it again. The auto-shut off feature has come in handy!

Works great if you can open the tank

    4 out of 5 stars
    AG - 2 months ago
I have had this humidifier for about a year and a half now and only use it when I am sick. I mainly use it at bedtime to help prevent my throat from drying out while I am asleep, and this really helps! However, it is such a pain to open the tank. The opening is a huge twist top and it seems to get vacuum sealed shut after using the humidifier, even after all the water has been used up and the machine is off for a long time. I have noticed opening the tank has become more difficult over time, and now, I cannot seem to get it open at all! It is frustrating, especially when you are sick with a runny congested nose and just exhausted. On the bright side, I have never encountered any of the negative experiences that I have read from multiple reviews. I have never had water spill from the machine, it has never had a burning plastic smell, and I have never had mineral/water deposit issues. BTW, I always fill the tank with regular tap water. It is a pretty decent humidifier, if only the process of filling it with water was not so difficult. At least it is one of the least expensive humidifiers I have seen, which is why I bought it in the first place.

This humidifier turns off in the middle of the night for no reason. Countless times I’ve woken up to see the mist has stopped and the green light has turned red even though there is plenty of water in the tank. I’ve cleaned it and it still doesn’t work very well. Avoid buying this humidifier unless you don’t mind babysitting an appliance and constantly making sure it’s ok.

This is a good alternative to an untrasonic humidifier that leaves fine dust on things. And also a good altrnative the the ones that require a replaceable filter. I'm filling it with filtered water from my RO tap. Because of that, it isn't developing and scale or sediment inside and I haven't needed to clean it. It can vaporize a full gallon of water in about 15 hours on the high setting. On low you'll get a full day out of one fill.

By design there are holes in the bottom of this. Do not move it while it is full. Just a stupid design. Be sure to place the unit where you want it. Take the water resevoir to fill it up and bring the resevoir to the unit. If you plan to move this around at all, don't buy it.

Great except for the mist is so weak that it takes forever to fill a small room and even then, it's not enough. Same effect as a small essential oil diffuser. Not worth the hassle/mess of clean-up, etc. for the minimal effect.
