Q: You mentioned that it removes microplastics but the pitcher itself is made of plastic so how is that possible?
A: Hi Gilda, Thank you for the email. We share your concerns about microplastics in our water, and take their presence and removal seriously. Microplastics are defined as plastic particulate 1 μm and 1000 μm in size. They can be intentionally made for specific uses, like microbeads in cosmetics, or from when larger plastic items break down due to weathering, material breakage, or mechanical forces. Additionally, microplastics can originate from synthetic fibers shedding off textiles during washing and use. The pitchers and housing are made of durable plastic materials that do not break down with normal use or time, and do not contribute to microplastic particulate in your water. All materials are also BPA-free and approved and verified for water contact. We also try to ensure we are responsible at manufacturing stages to limit waste when and where possible. Our LifeStraw membrane microfilters are made of Polysulfone, a high-performance thermoplastic that's tough and safe. It maintains its strength even in high temperatures, ensuring safe and reliable filtration. Thus, our product itself won't introduce microplastics into your water through regular usage at the normal temperature condition. The LifeStraw membrane microfilter is specifically designed to remove microplastic particles from drinking water. Through rigorous testing, we've confirmed that our filters block an impressive 99.999% of 1µm microplastic particulates in water. The high rate of reduction efficacy shows that our LS Home product do not add microplastics to the filtered water, and confirms our product itself won't introduce microplastics into your water through regular usage. We have recently posted a blog on this subject at our site. I recommend reviewing it for more information about the emerging science and how our products fit into the conversation: https://lifestraw.com/blogs/news/filtering-microplastics-and-nanoplastics-from-drinking-water Thank you for reaching out and please let us know if we can be of further assistance. We're happy to help.
