Book Synopsis

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Read with Jenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today - From the author of Daisy Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo . . .

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Time, Marie Claire, PopSugar, Parade, Teen Vogue, Self - "Irresistible . . . High drama at the beach, starring four sexy, surfing siblings and their deadbeat, famous-crooner dad."--People

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, the family drama that ensues will change their lives will change forever.

Malibu: August 1983. It's the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over--especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud--because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he's been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can't stop thinking about promised she'll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own--including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family's generations will all come rising to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

This edition includes an interview with the author, book club discussion questions, and more!

Read it on and off for a year, really wish I would have just donated it. Idk, Hollywood glitz and glam is just not my thing I guess. Not much happens in this book.

Most overrated book I’ve read in a long time. Why does everyone love this?! The plot was decent but the writing could’ve gone way deeper! Lots of potential, fell very flat.

“They had taught her that family is found, that whether it be blood or circumstance or choice, what binds us does not matter. All that matters is that we are bound.” * * Alright, I did it. I read my first ever TJR and……I LOVED IT! The Riva family stole my heart -especially Nina. She was such a matriarch, such a voice of reason, and I would have gone to bat for her in an instant! These 4 siblings grew up within these pages and I truly feel like a proud Mom. At the half way point my theories were a mile long & mostly wrong, thank goodness, because I was about to write Taylor Jenkins Reid a letter. Needless to say, I will 100% be reading Evelyn Hugo next and will take suggestions for the one after that. I’ve said it so many times but rich people behaving badly in novel form is a trope I AM HERE FOR!!

I was super excited about this book because I love anything California. I've never read this author, but based on all the reviews I thought it sounded like a sure thing. It's taking me a weeks to finish, and while I like the the story and the characters it's just not very engaging. disappointed.

I LOVED this book. Only gave it a 4 because there were consistent s3x scenes described throughout the book, although short, it felt a little unnecessary along with profanity. Other than that I really enjoyed it!

TJR has done it again! I feel like everyone has been reading this book and waiting on anticipated pins and needles to get their grubby, little hands on it. I mean, I know I had! As nervous as I was to finally read a @tjenkinsreid book, once I had, I feel like I have created a monster within myself. I am ready and prepared to read them ALL! . Malibu Rising is the latest novel, freshly released this June. There is already a tv show in the works (of course!). It follows the lives of the Riva siblings during a 24 hour period in the 1980s. The thing I love about Reid and her writing, is how connected she bring her audience to her characters. And she does this all by writing in third person. It’s extremely impressive! She also writes about several other non main character, which you somehow feel also completely connected to too… as if you know these people or if you googled them they actually existed. All these small side stores tie together to make the bigger picture. We also glimpse into the past of where the Riva kids came from and how they grew up. . Even though I have read TJR’s other books, I did catch several Easter egg references. I love how she ties all her character together within the same world. It makes them feel alive. . Truly, this book lives up to the hype. It’s a must read, just like all her other books. So don’t hesitate any longer, get yourself a copy and read this one! You don’t want to be the only one who doesn’t know how Nina Riva’s house burned down!

5 stars. 5 beautiful, hard earned stars. Holy cow, Malibu Rising shook my very soul. This is a book I’ll keep thinking about for a long time. I’ve been on a huge kick lately of reading books with beautiful settings, and this one takes the cake for sure. TJR has clearly spent a lot of time researching early 80s Malibu, and she painted the most beautiful picture of it. Just..... wow. I’m stunned after finishing this book. It was so beautiful and sad and hopeful and deep and intense. It pulled me in from the first line and was impossible to put down. I’m a sucker for books told from multiple perspectives because I love the added depth and the fuller picture. Malibu Rising tells two stories across different decades, and the moment they intersect is so fulfilling. There are a ton of different narrators, ranging from the four main Riva siblings to random party attendees, and it kept the story interesting and well-paced. TJR has an incredible ability to transport readers across time and place and into a world you’ve never even dreamed of. I want nothing more right now than to hop on a plane to Malibu and start learning to surf just so that I can feel more connected to the Rivas, a fictional family that I didn’t know existed three days ago but that I’ll now remember forever. This was truly an incredible story of family, fame, hurt, surfing, and a seriously crazy party.
