Got this because it's supposed to provide proper drainage for tropicals. Worst choice ever. This retains so much water and drains so poorly it caused root damage to healthy plants that I've had for years. And all the moisture created a fungus gnat problem I've never had before. Don't do it!

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Tropical Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. All of our potting mixes including the moisture control ones are formulated to allow excessive water to move through the soil and drain out the bottom of the pot. We recommend checking the bottom of the container, if possible and verify that there is an open drainage hole. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. NOT less prone to gnats - 1 month ago, Verified purchaser
half a dozen gnats flew out of the bag the moment it was opened.
1 reply from Miracle-Gro Consumer Services team - 1 month ago
Hello, and thank you for your feedback regarding Miracle-Gro Tropical Potting Mix. We are sorry to hear about this experience. Insects could not survive the composting and packing process. However, it is possible for them to enter the bag during shipping and storage. Insects may also come in with the soil of transplanted plants or enter through cracks, crevices, open windows or doors simply looking for a suitable environment. The small flying insects are likely fungus gnats. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil), but can be a nuisance. A possible way to control fungus gnats includes allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering, which will help control the larvae. Also, you can try applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants; the larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. If there is anything we can do to help you have a 5-star experience, please contact our Consumer Services team at 888-295-6902 for assistance.

I use this product with Potting soil, Orchid Bark, and perlite. I strain out the lava rocks and put them in my aroid mix. I’ll stick with the all Miracle Gro products for my homemade aroid mix! Definitely recommend!

My plants hate this soil. It also never completely dries out. Skip this. The cactus soil is so much better.

I purchased this soil a few weeks ago. I usually don't buy Miracle-Grow products because I've had bad experiences but I bought it because it advertised "because of the potting mix's unique ingredients, it is less likely to attract fungus gnats". When I first got my plants a few years ago there were some fungus gnats but I worked so hard to get rid of them. I hadn't repotted them since then and I thought I would try this out. This soil was clearly contaminated upon purchase because I have had my plants for 4 years and I have never in all this time had all of my plants contaminated with as many gnats. I understand it says "less likely", however, there are SO MANY I'm not sure if I will be able to damage control. Every room in my house now has gnats flying around, every plant I own is now teaming with gnats after I repotted them in this soil. I cannot stress this enough DO NOT BUY this soil, you will regret it.

I got this to amend with bark and extra pearlite for more drainage for my plants. DO NOT USE THIS! It NEVER dries out. All my plants started getting root rot and they were perfectly happy before I repotted them!

Don't Do It

If you have tropical plants, I would avoid this stuff like the plague. Unless your home is so drafty to the point where having must-have humidity for most tropicals is basically pointless, this stuff will not dry out. I currently have two dragon trees suffering from root rot because this soil became so compacted after watering that it suffocated them. Unless I gently turned the soil with a chopstick, it would take more than two weeks to dry. I even added perlite and peat moss to create air pockets, but nothing helped. Currently, I have my dragon trees in a new soil mixture made of peat, orchid mix, and perlite, but I'm afraid the root damage is too severe for the trees to recover. Unless you use this stuff sparingly, you're better off using something different. My guess would be the wrong kind of sand in the mixture.

Do not buy to plant dieffenbachia plants!!!!!!

I am so disappointed with this product that I would not tell my enemy to buy it. In the past I have used various Miracle Gro products for repotting and transplanting. I am mostly pleased with the results. Although I noticed that the quality is changing for some of the mixes. I saw on -line that African Violet Mixes are good for dieffenbachias. I could not find it so I used the Miracl Gro Tropical Mix for transplanting five dieffenbachias. One of the pots was plastic and the rest were terracotta. All of the potted plants using that mix would retain water for a long time. The plastic pot retained water for two weeks although it was outside. The soil looked heavy and awrful. I am beyond disappointed. Needless to say all of my beloved plants died due to root rot.

Lots of Fungus Gnats and Doesn’t Drain Properly

I noticed a lot of fungus gnats on the fly trap after using this soil to plant after 2 weeks. Frustratingly I’d spent a lot of effort to get rid of them on other plants just months before. The soil also retains too much water and doesn’t drain well, contrary to what the packaging says, hence causing the fungus gnats and potentially root rot.

Under no circumstance use this product on any type of monstera, philodendron, Hoya or tropical plant prone to root rot. This mix retains water for way too long and you would have to water counting drops to avoid root rot or overwatering. You actually have to make sure that at least an inch of the soil is dry before you water and it also gets awfully compacted after a week or two. So far I lost 2 Monsteras Peru, 1 Monstera Deliciosa and I am fighting to recover another 2 Monstera Peru, 4 Monstera Deliciosa, 2 Monstera Tretrasperma and 2 Monstera Adansonii. Finally if you bought it, mix it with perlite, worm castings, leca, more lava rocks, bark or pumice rock. Or just don’t use it!
