Despite the bad reviews, I wanted to give Miracle-Gro orchid potting mix a chance as over the years I have purchased many other Miracle-Gro products and liked them. Like so many other Mircle-Gro Orchid potting mix product reviews, the pieces are very tiny and fall through the holes of my orchid pots. I dumped the mixture into a pail to see if the smaller pieces filtered to the top of the bag, but the entire bag was full of tiny, unusable pieces. The potting mix is nothing like the picture on the front of the bag. If this mix is considered a course blend, I can’t imagine what a medium or fine blend would be.

I bought this not too long ago, finally got around to opening it and using it for repotting, and a swarm of bugs flew out of it and a ton of little white bugs were all over the growing medium. I’m tossing the whole bag out, I can’t run the risk that these bugs won’t destroy my plants as they’re likely to do. I immediately closed it and put it into a plastic bag to toss. Would take a photo but worried about more bugs flying out.

First buy yesterday. Worthless. NOT even worth the trouble to take it back. Thrown in the garbage where it belongs. Huge chunks of wood, good only of 10" - 12" pots. Plus tons of fine dirt / decayed wood . . . EXACTLY what sources say DOES NOT belong in Orchid mix. I put a sample in a 4" Orchid pot (less the big chunks of wood) and ran water through it, and the "dirt" came pouring out of the slits and holes in the Orchid pot. At the time of this writing, your 1-star ratings were 28% of the total reviews. Really burst my bubble regarding Miracle Gro products.

However, it is possible for them to enter the bag during shipping and storage. If you are seeing small flying insects, it is probably fungus gnats. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil). Possible ways to control fungus gnats include: 1) Allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering will help control the larvae. 2) Applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. Bought thiis 3 days ago and I have never been more disappointed in an orchid mix. I usually use an orchid mix on ALL my houseplant but not this one unless your substrate is wood chips.

I have used this product in the past. The bag I bought yesterday is below standards. I opened to find that it is really wet. The chips are chunky but I cut them up, but this bag has rocks in it, plus some other material ( matter) that is slimy and gross.

It's been about a year since I bought orchid bark. This recent purchase(5-2023) I noticed that the bark were bigger chunks (larger than mulch) the largest chuck would not even go into an orchid pot. Why are the barks so large? Doesn't Miracle Grow notice this?

Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction which often occurs with potting mixes composed primarily of actual topsoil. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots of the plant which improves plant performance. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our growing media, including potting soil, garden soil, lawn soil, topsoil, etc., you should not find overly large pieces of wood or bark. I bought this product a week ago (Nov 2022) - I live in a condo, and the windows are closed and it's cold and snowing outside - used about 2 cups to re-pot 3 orchids, and now I have a bug infestation. I looked back in the bag and it is FULL of bugs. I only used about 2 cups of an 8.8L bag - and now I need to throw out the entire bag. And now that I recall, the last, and only other time, I got a bug infestation is when I used Miracle Grow potting mix for indoor plants and it took me 3-4 months to finally get rid of all the bugs. It was a nightmare. Never again!

I just opened my new bag of this orchid soil to top up my orchids and there were a bunch of gnats as soon as I opened the bag. So, unfortunately I can not use this as I definitely do not want to introduce gnats to all of the other house plants I have. I purchased this brand because of the great reputation but unfortunately am pretty disappointed now and am stuck without the soil I need to finish my project.

Too coarse bark

I bought this a week and a half ago and the bark is so corse some of the pieces don’t fit in the pot. I usually like miracle grow soils but they really need to work on this. It’s also very dry.

They are doing well in this mix after a couple months and I don’t need to worry about fertilizing them for six months. The course mix drains water well but holds the orchids in place. It has very little “dust” that washes out of the mix when watered.
Full of Symphyla bugs.

My orchids were were being destroyed by these bugs which I discovered were inside a bag of my orchid potting mix bought in June ‘22. I am already dealing with Micro-Go’s fungus gnat issue from Micro-Gro’s regular potting mix in my regular plants. I feel Micro-Gro should provide bags of sand not tips to use it- it’s not available in my entire region. I have many plants - 4 being large floor plants. All were healthy before repotting. My apartment was bug-free prior to bringing their products into it. I would strongly recommend opening any MG potting mix before purchase and examine for insects or larvae between May and October.

I purchased this product expecting orchid bark what I got was orchid bark mixed with what appears to be soil. The mix was very moist so I got my flashlight and poured some out on paper to inspect it. Sure enough, there were some small white bugs in it. I sprayed the mix with a neem oil mixture, hopefully after it dries the bugs will be gone. I do not like this potting mix and will not buy it again. I wanted the bark.

This spring, I needed a high-quality substrate component for repotting my orchids, and this mix has surpassed my expectations. The first thing that I noticed when opening the bag was that it was packed with the product. There aren't small chipped pieces of bark peppered throughout the package. You truly are getting a lot of coarse product in each bag. This product provides exactly what I needed for my Phalaenopsis because it is a potting mix that doesn't hold water, so my plants can get good airflow, and their roots can continue to be healthy. All of the pieces are appropriately sized for Phalaenopsis and even Oncidium orchids. I'm still a beginner at growing these beautiful species, and I'm glad to find a quality potting mix to ensure the beauty and health of my plants.
