Works like it's supposed to. Using to extract sound from Apple TV box into 2.1 stereo.

Connecting AppleTV 4K to a vintage B&K AVR 300-series receiver. Old AppleTV had TOSLINK optical output, new improved one does NOT (grrrr). This Blackbird gave me good optical output (after also getting appropriately capable HDMI cables) but never would allow the image signal through to the old television, a 10-year-old (not vintage... just old) VIZIO that's deserves to be replaced. Image worked fine when connected directly to the AppleTV 4K and sadly Monoprice tech and I must have had a communication problem. I thought a replacement had been sent, but nothing arrived and the return RMA was shut for me. The B&K has digital coax inputs, so I'm just running the AppleTV through the HDMI to the TV, then sending sound through the coax to the B&K. Sounds good, not good-enough, and requires turning on the TV just to stream music through to the receiver. So... I've been a Monoprice customer for many years with much more surprise-and-delight than this-don't-work, and not here to whine. Just be aware it's _not_ a foolproof solution. Troubleshooting HDMI reminds me of finicky SCSI computer connections. Also, if your sound doesn't work, make sure your HDMI cables are up to current snuff. But I never received an answer as to why the picture wouldn't convey through the Blackbird when it does directly from the AppleTV.

Bought it because my 10 yr old bedroom tv doesn't have any audio outputs. The sound bar I had had an HDMI in and an HDMI out to the tv and it went bad after 6 years. So This unit taps the audio from the ROKU streamer I have via the S/PDIF to my new sound bar. It works fine. No degradation in the video signal. The only thing is it also passes the audio signal to the tv. So I have to keep the tv sound volume to 0 so only the sound bar plays.

Getting TV sound into hearing aid streamer -- problem solved!

I donate a fair amount of time to volunteering in the blind/low vision and deaf/hard-of-hearing communities. One blind veteran I help needed to get TV sound into his hearing aids via streaming since he's not only blind but now nearly deaf. His TV had no audio output! I put one of these little "black boxes" in the HDMI connection between his satellite TV set-top box and his TV. It produces perfect sound for his hearing aid streamer transmitter. Plus, for sighted hard of hearing folks, it preserves "lip-sync!" I'm a happy repeat customer -- it's a great "black box!"

The Monoprice Blackbird 4K HDMI Audio Extractor, 18Gbps, HDCP 2.2 is well built and performs as advertised. I only wish that I had recognized its utility years ago. One caution, I discovered the existing and working driver for my graphics card was out of date and would only do 2 channel output. Fortunately, I stumbled on the updated driver to make the board output5 channels to the gizmo.

Works as expected allowing me to continue using my old but good sounding surround receiver. Got it paired up with a HDMI switch for added flexibility. Unit is smaller than expected and feels solidly built.

Using with my XBox One X so I could keep my current optical audio connection to the rest of my audio equipment (pretty much saves me having to redo my audio stack). I currently only play the OneX at 1080p, so I'm not pushing this as far as its capabilities support, but it seems to consistently work for me. I also use it in conjunction with a Nintendo Switch dock to get my switch games to my audio stack. Does what I need it to, and its still working.
Works as expected; great for the price.

After getting the settings right on both my Xbox Series X and the Blackbird, I get the Dolby surround audio that was the reason I bought the device. I have a new Series X (that only has HDMI out) and an old receiver (that uses HDMI for video only and needs optical or coaxial SPDIF for surround audio), and this device bridged them very well?especially for the price.

I am in general wary of splitter technology. Often, especially with inexpensive devices, there is static/noise or latency (sound/picture discord resulting in the very annoying phenomenon of lips moving out of sync with the sound of the speaker’s voice). I am very happy to say that neither of these happens with this Blackbird! What a delight! And it was very straightforward to hook up to split the HDMI as input from my new Apple TV into HDMI output to my Epson projector and optical audio output to my Bose home theater sound system. (I did need get a short HDMI cable to mate the Apple TV to the Blackbird.) I highly recommend this product!

Device does not pass LPCM 5.1 sound from the optical port even though the owners' manual in the box says it will pass optical sound formats including "LPCM 5.1" Monoprice has changed the online owners manual. It now says it supports sampling rates up to 192 kHz, but says nothing about number of channels supported. Not sure which is worse: a false claim, or none at all. Other than that, it works.
Works with optical headsets on new consoles

Recently purchased this item to continue to use my headset on the new Xbox Series X. The headphone amp uses optical and the new consoles removed that port. Using this on a 1440p 144hz monitor so I needed 1440p passthrough and this supported 4K 60 so same spec. It does support 1440p 120hz just fine as this wasn’t in the manual. But it does not allow Freesync/VRR passthrough so I’m praying the XSX won’t drop too many frames and cause tearing.

This little device enabled me to connect my Roku Ultra to an old (i.e., more than 20 years) Yamaha receiver that predated the HDMI standard. With a couple of tweaks to the audio settings on the Roku, I can now get pristine 5.1 Dolby Digital output through my receiver using an optical cable. Yes, I could just get a modern receiver, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the old one except for the legacy connections. A Monoprice HDMI switch that I had from before also allowed me to connect a Nintendo Switch to the same extractor, so I can get digital audio from both the Roku and the Switch! No latency problems passing the signal through all these devices and works fine with HDCP, too. Thanks, Monoprice!

This product saved me from replacing my Denon surround sound receiver that doesn't have HDMI inputs. I was concerned about the audio being out of sync but it works perfectly regardless what I plug in. I run optical cable to Denon. I use this for everything - Roku, AppleTV, Laptop, PS4 and Xbox. Great when guests come over with devices to plug in. One HDMI port to plug into and everything just works every time. Plugged it in and haven't had to touch it since.

i have discovered that most media streamers have eliminated the optical out that allowed a two channel audio user to run the sound of streamed movies etc. through their DAC. Only a couple of DAC's on market have HDMI flow through (Bryston and NAD) . this really is a bummer. Apple, Roku, Nvidia sheild all dropped the optical out. I recently purchased a Nvidia Sheild. had to get this Blackbird to add the optical out to my DAC and two channel system. i have just received and set it up and it works for what i wanted. i am finding the output volume a little low requiring me to turn the volume on amp up more than other sources. the sound and picture quality seems acceptable so i am happy with purchase. product recommendations for monoprice that i think would do well: 2 channel preamp with digital inputs including flow through of HDMI Matching your monolith 2X power amp 2 channel DAC with HDMI inputs music and movie streamer with optical and digital coax outputs Basically a unit that combines the capability of a Nvidia Sheild and a bluesound node 2i in to one unit. would sell alot!

I wanted to keep my TV/speaker/surround sound setup as is but also have sound available via bluetooth. Used this to split out the sound and connect it to a bluetooth transmitter.
