Book Synopsis

"Absolute, utter perfection."―Chloe Liese, USA Today bestselling author of Only and Forever

NATIONAL BESTSELLER - A married couple joins a week-long wilderness expedition to help them reconnect in this heartfelt companion novel to the viral TikTok sensation Out on a Limb.

High school sweethearts Sarah and Caleb Linwood have always been a sure thing. For the past seventeen years, they have had each other's backs through all of life's ups and downs.

But Sarah has begun to wonder . . . who is she without her other half?

When she decides to take on a project of her own, a fundraising gala in memory of her late mother, Sarah wants nothing more than to prove to herself--and to everyone else--that she doesn't need Caleb's help to succeed. She's still her mother's daughter after all, independent and capable.

That is, until the event fails and Caleb uninvitedly steps in to save the day.

The rift that follows unearths a decade of grievances and doubts. Are they truly the same people they were when they got married at nineteen? Are they supposed to be?

In a desperate attempt to fix what they fear is breaking, Sarah and Caleb make the spontaneous decision to get out of their comfort zones and join a grueling hiking trip intended to guide couples through rough patches.

What follows is a life-affirming comedy of errors as two nature-averse people fight their way out of the woods in order to find their way back to their roots.

"Out of the Woods is my love letter to all of us who met their soulmate before they had the chance to fully meet themselves." I started off 2025 with my first ever eARC and I'm so incredibly lucky it was Hannah Bonam-Young's incredible book, Out of the Woods. The story follows Sarah Linwood as throws a fundraising gala in memory of her late mother who passed away from ALS. Fail or succeed, the event was Sarah's opportunity to prove to everyone and especially herself that she was capable of doing something on her own. As the evening progressed, it was becoming clear that they were far from reaching their goal and once again, she was a damsel in distress with her safety net of people there to save her at every moment. The world seems to crash around her as she tries to figure out exactly who she is without her husband, Caleb, there to save the day once again. "Name one thing that I should be proud of, Caleb. Something that's only mine. Something that I've done entirely on my own." After 17 years of marriage, Sarah and Caleb decide to go on an outdoor couples retreat to reevaluate their marriage and address the changes they both felt were brewing. I completely fell in love with Sarah and Caleb's story. The beginning of their relationship was unveiled slowly as we bounced between two timelines. We see how Sarah came to be and how her past has forced to become an adult when her mother needed her most. Hannah draws you in and never lets you go until the very last page. She had me laughing out loud at times and ugly crying the next. Sarah and Caleb's story will always be in my heart and mind. Thank you, Hannah, for this incredible gift of story. "If you give me the space to grow, I'll plant myself next to you. Always."

HI HELLO I LOVED THIS SO MUCH. I have truly never felt more seen or understood than by this book and by Sarah. As someone who also got married at 18, had kids shortly after and never went to college or "made a name for herself", I really felt everything Sarah was going through. Every single thing she was saying is something ive either felt, gone through, or said out loud myself. Constantly feeling saved by my sweet, perfect husband, feeling like I have nothing to show for myself other than being a wife and a mom. It was all a little to close to the sun if you know what I mean. Hannah Bonam-Young absolutely nailed the feelings of feeling lost, like you have nothing for yourself, like you're a person just existing alongside the people around you without a "purpose". Watching Sarah process all of her feelings, not knowing what exactly she wanted but knowing she wanted more for herself and knowing she wanted all that with Caleb still was so refreshing. I loved that this book dove into the topic of couples who married young without making it all look bad. I loved that we got to see two people who have been in each others lives since they were kids, who got married still as kids basically, and still continued to choose each other and do everything in their power to continue to make things work TOGETHER. Getting married young comes with so much stigma and seeing such a beautiful and raw portrayal of it without all the negativity was refreshing. Seeing that it CAN and DOES work was amazing. I'll never get over this book truly. I loved everything about it and I'm so thankful to Hannah for writing such a beautiful book that will make so many of us feel seen and understood in a way we havent before.

I was honored to receive an early version of this (thank you NetGalley!). Out on a Limb was by far my favorite book in 2024, so getting a chance to read Out of the Woods ahead of the release was like a dream. Hannah Bonam-Young does what a lot of authors don't do: she writes realistic people-who are worthy of love— in realistic situations. This book was no different. Honestly, I highlighted SO many quotes in this book and am going to talk about them in therapy. This is a raw story about a woman who-despite seemingly having what many women aspire to have-finds herself lost and purposeless. 100% relatable! This read less like a romance book and more like a learning-to-love-yourself book, which was a refreshing take imo. Where Out on a Limb was a love letter to accepting what (and who) life hands you, Out of the Woods is a love letter to not being complacent in life while also keeping true to yourself and those you love. It gave us a glimpse into more of Win and Bo, but showed us a completely different angle on Caleb and Sarah. My only wish was that we got more Caleb. He was there, but he felt more of a background character. But I'm torn because if he was in the foreground more, it might not have been the same book. But because we got to watch Win and Bo fall in love, I felt like I missed some of that with Sarah and Caleb, despite the beautiful flashbacks. Overall, I loved this book and can't wait for more from this author!
