The PetSafe® SmartDoor™ allows you to control your pet’s access. When set to automatic mode, only your pets wearing the SmartKey™ can pass through the SmartDoor™. Bought this for my pup. It’s been in use for 6 months and already broken. My dog walked in and the flap broke. I’m seeing a lot of complaints about that now. You cannot order a new flap so if it breaks then you’re out about 200 bucks. The batteries die so fast on this as well so if you do buy then your going to need back up batteries on hand.

We're sorry to hear your dog's door has been damaged! Though very sturdy, as with any material these doors can be damaged by physical force. Though replacement flaps for the small size are available separately, they will not resolve damage to the hinge area, and it is the hinge most often damaged when the flap is hit with force. We're so sorry for any misunderstanding. To help prevent damage to the hinge area we do recommend working with your dog not to put pressure on the door while it's locked, as well as using the door at a walk each time and ensuring the door is at the right shoulder height for your dog at their adult height. We would love to speak with you about your situation directly so that we can help with your door, and also troubleshoot the battery issues you are experiencing. This door should have a battery life of around 90 days, so if you are experiencing much shorter battery life this is definitely something we need to find the root cause of. Though these doors are very sturdy, the hinge area can be damaged by repeated force, and/or if the door is a bit too low for the adult shoulder height of the tallest pet using the door. I purchased the first one second hand and worked great for a few months. One day out of nowhere the door broke on the hinges. I bought a second one new thinking that maybe it was a coincidence but here I am a little under a year later and this one busted too. The same way. Awesome idea but needs better execution

As all the other reviewers say, you will have to rebuy this door every year or so. I do have 3 large dogs so I did think this was a me problem, however after seeing the reviews I know this is just a design flaw that presafe doesn’t care to fix.

Door is a little over a year old, now even putting it in manual the door doesn't want to to unlock. It will eventually if left in the manual unlock mode, about 3-5minutes later. But now it won't unlock with any keys, even new ones, and after doing the relearning process. We have indoor cats and don't want to leave it unlocked all the time, but our dogs need to be able to come in and out. Pretty disappointed in this door, especially for the price. And now that it is installed, can't really cleanly go to another door since it is an odd size

This thing is amazing. Four dogs from medium to large over the span of 18 years beat the heck out of the door. We give our dogs free rein of the fenced yard so they were in and out frequently. It finally stopped working so I am getting another. Well worth the money.

Fix the hinge or find a way for the hinge to be replace. This door is too expensive to replace every 6 month to a year over a hinge. Unfortunately because of this issue. I wouldn't waste your money!!

I am now on my 4th pet safe electronic door in 2 years. Honestly, I would switch at this point, but the wall and our kennel are build around this door. Every time it has been the hinges at the top that have broken and I cannot find that part as a replacement. I don’t think my dogs are too hard on the door, I think the hinges are the biggest problem.

It is crucial to mention that in most cases where hinges are repeatedly damaged, this is an indicator that the door may be installed a bit too low for the adult shoulder height of the tallest dog using the door, and/or the dogs may be using the door at a run or with force. We would recommend working with your dogs to use the door at a walk- many customers have had success teaching this by temporarily placing an obstacle in front of the door to break up patterns and then rewarding their dogs for slowing and taking the door with less momentum. Poor quality and battery performance

The installation was OK but the batteries in the main unit only last a week or so (we're using re-chargables, but still, a week!) One of the collars is now flashing red which makes me think that battery is also dying and that's been about 10 days since we installed the door.

Typically, high power name brand D cell batteries can have up to 3 months of battery life. Love the door at first it worked really really well at keeping out the cold air but overtime my two buffalo dogs broke the plastic hinge that holds the door to the top. Now the thing is absolutely worthless. I’ve tried multiple means by which to fix it, and have searched endlessly for replacement parts, but have no way to do such as I have not found anything available. I would love to that Pata make a stronger hinge may be something not out of 16th inch plastic perhaps extruded, aluminum or something I don’t know, but definitely the Achilles heel of this otherwise awesome door

Hinges Broke within months

I was really excited about this product because it would fit my old english sheep dog but would not allow large critters to enter AND my cat could stay in while my dog could go out. Unfortunately, the plastic hinges broke within months of owning it. I have uninstalled it to see how I might fix it but it appears the hinge cannot be fixed or replaced.

I recently bought this and installed on our bsck door. I have to say that I'm having some regrets. The door was easy to install and is a good size for my 2 dogs, but there are several things I am not pleased with. #1 -- the key is HUGE and super awkward. I expected it to be similar to an underground fence collar but it isn't. Even on our large dog it hangs awkwardly on her collar and she gets it hung on stuff. It's ridiculous on our Boston Terrier. I can't even leave it on his collar which defeats the purpose. #2 -- the flap is poorly designed. It really has to be pushed hard to open and it has a tendency to swing back and catch them if they are just trying to look out. It's also really hard to train the dogs to use compared to other doors. The key doesn't unlock quick enough and it's so loud that it scares them. It burns through batteries way too fast. I wish I could buy a rubber flap to switch out but unfortunately I'm stuck because nothing like this is offered. So I paid extra for a sensor lock that is useless because of the huge, awkward keys and now I'm stuck with the weird locking flap that my dogs don't realize is open unless I prop it open. Huge waste of money that I'm stuck with.

We have had this door less than a year and the flimsy plastic brackets have broken off. As far as I can tell there is no replacement for the large door only one for a small door. There are many reviews on this issue and I would think the company would fix the problem or at least sell replacement part. Very disappointed.

I just ordered my third door in 8 years. They are very helpful for a while, but I have two 65lb labs that run through the door to save me from people outside our yard. Have never used the collar sensors. Just need a long lasting door that works for Labs. I am committed to this one since there is a pre-cut hole in the door.

I purchased this dog door when I first moved to help my dog get out and cat stay in. the door does have some problems (key gets disconnected sometimes and if my cat gets to it quick enough he can make it out and lock the door wrong. it also has a not so strong flap connector and my shepherd has knocked it out I think 3 times so far.) besides the acasenal mess up with the door it is by far my favorite home perches. the company is beyond amazing and their customer service is wonderful! every time I call they are so friendly in helping me with my situation. I will continue to tell my friends and family to get dog doors from pet safe. if they need anyone to test out stronger door flap supports me and my shepherd will gladly put it to the test!

We did a kitchen redo about a year ago and put in a door for our guy. Motor already broken, our guy 16lbs mutt can come through whenever he wants from the outside but not from the inside. Hummmm dirty floors were not part of my plan, disappointed completely.
