Last fall I Purchased 60 bags of Scott’s Topsoil to fill in holes where 2 trees and roots were removed. The guy that takes care of our yard, said your grass will be yellow in the spring because the “topsoil” is nothing than mulch. He was correct!!

Quality of soil on the decline

I have been a lifelong user of Scotts Topsoil and enjoyed the benefits from its use. I was an advocate for the product recommending to friends and neighbors. Unfortunately, over the past 2-3 years the quality of soil in the bag has diminished greatly. I regularly find sticks, shards of wood and other debris with my bag purchase. Time to find a new soil for my yard.

Hi GlennS. We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback. We do use screens to filter out debris but sometimes these break and may not be caught for a period of time after it happens. We apologize, this is not the quality of product we intend to produce. Your comments will be passed on to quality control. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. I used Scott’s top soil for many years.Recently I bought 20 bags and I was disappointed. It contained a good amount of rocks and wood chips. I had to make a screen and sift the dirt. I will not be buying this product again.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. Small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our soil. You should not find large pieces of wood or bark. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots. It is possible our screens were damaged and went unnoticed. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.

Good black stuff to enrich your native soil with.

Have bought several hundred bags over the years, I have 1/2" box mesh screened a lot of them and only find a handful of material that is wood and small rock, not really a big deal to worry about. It adds organic material to existing native soil for more microbial soil health and fertiliy it is not dirt or one of the sand, silt, clay types of "soil" bit it works for what it's intended purpose is, to enrich marginal light colored dirt that has little organic content.

I purchased over 250 bags and had these put down where 25 trees and stumps were removed. Lots of money spent and the were full of larger to smallrocks(lots of them), plastic, glass, and lots of mulch and tons of tree debris!! I had to hire again guys to rake up the debris several times so I could have it all seeded. This is the worst TOPSOIL if you want to call it that I have ever bought,‘I trusted the SCOTTS name!!

Weeds and more weeds

I bought 13 bags 3 weeks ago to plant new grass seed on my lawn. The grass is growing but so are the weeds. Also, had grubs inside. I would stay away from this top soil. Try another brand
1 reply from Customer Care team - 7 months ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. While the composting process does destroy most of the weed seeds in our soils, there still can be some viable weed seeds after composting. Soil naturally contains plant seeds. It is unlikely that the worms were present at time of packaging. If there are holes in the bag and the product is stored outside on the ground, it can be accessible to worms. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.

Went for Premium Soil and got Mulch and Rocks

I should have read the reviews before purchasing, but I trusted the Scott's brand name. I see from the Scott's responses that sticks and wood chips are intentionally left in the soil. That should cease. Folks buy topsoil for pure soil, If I want mulch, I know where to buy it. Purify your production methods to screen out all wood, wood chips and rocks. I get better soil from a generic bag which is less expensive than Scott's. I used this soil to cover grass seed and now I spend my days picking out wood chips and sticks every time I water the seeds. A predominant use of topsoil is as seed cover. I don't want mulch in my seed cover.

Closer to mulch than what I remember as topsoil. Mostly wood chips and very little soil. Grass won't grow on it.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. Formulas vary by region based on available materials. Some areas have more of a compost based formula while others have more of a bark and wood fines based mix. While typically the version found at a single retailer will be the same if stores are located in an area that has multiple of our growing media plants shipping to the area you can find different versions at different retailers in those areas. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Premium Topsoil and appreciate your feedback. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our growing media including potting soil, garden soil, lawn soil, and topsoil, you should not find large pieces of wood or bark. We take every effort to screen out debris, however, it is possible that screens were damaged and not noticed, allowing some debris into bagged product. Most of our soils especially lawn and garden soils are made of composted forest products. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. I bought the top soil to cover dog urine spots in the lawn (the urine kills the grass). Wherever I used the soil, wide-blade grass grew (this is more like a weed than actual lawn grass). I have to pull these weeds by hand because the usual lawn weed killer doesn't work. I will no longer buy this bagged top soil.

I bought 4-5 bags this year and am so disappointed, it has what looks like sticks and mulch in with the dirt. We used the dirt to try to help grow grass seed in our yard. Needless to say we have had no luck with that.
