Q: Ok. The top locks are they supposed to move together? I can’t get the dang thing to open! It’s aligned it is all set but when I try to open it only the top lock comes back.

submitted by Boymom2 - 6 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. The top will move and the bottom will spring open when you lift the gate door slightly and swing open.

  • A: I disagree with the answer above. Nothing about this latch mechanism is easy. It is a very poor design. I can tell already, in just the first hour, that my wife is going to tear this thing off the wall. I have taped one of the top pins open just to make it somewhat functional.

submitted byCraig - 6 years ago

Q: Can the extentions all go on one side or do you have to have at least one extention on each side for a 59" opening?

submitted by Laura - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi - great question. Please follow the instructions which show that if you use all of the extensions they should be used on both sides of the gate. There are some nice images in the instructions that show the best configuration for different openings.

Q: Gate door is at an odd angle rather than horizontal. When pressure mounted there is a gaping area at the gate closure mechanism so it will not close. Can & how can this be adjusted?

submitted by MC - 2 years ago
  • A: Hi - because the gate is pressure mounted, before installation is completed, the door may appear off-center. As the tension bolts are extended, the door and door latches should come into alignment. If you need further assistance, please contact our Consumer Relations team at 401-671-6551. Thanks!

Q: My opening is 54" wall to wall and 51" floorboard to floorboard. will this work?

submitted by Puppy Mom - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi, we're sorry, it sounds like this gate will not work for your particular dimensions. We think you would be best assisted by a member of our team and want to connect you with the correct person. Please contact (401) 671-6551 so we can address your question and specific dimensions ASAP. Many thanks!

Q: How can I purchase an additional set of the wall cups? I would like to move the gate to a different door way from time to time.

submitted by Ta - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi - please contact the Summer Infant consumer relations team so we can help. Thanks!

Q: I need it to fit 48" stair opening. I can't figure an extension combination that will fit. 36 + 10=46. +7 = 43. +4 = 40. Any suggestions?

submitted by mommaNana - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi! The large 10" extension should work well. With the tension bolts in place, the gate will cover the 48" opening. This would fall under configuration D in the instruction manual. Please reach out to us if you need any additional support! https://www.summerinfant.com/consumer-relations/contact-us

Q: Will I be able to install this between walls that are not parallel (one wall is at an angle)?

submitted by Angled Walls - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi - this gate works via pressure and requires that the walls be parallel in order for it to work effectively.

Q: Is this a tension gate? I am looking for a gate that I don’t have to drill anything into the wood trim on either side of the wall opening.

submitted by Rebecca - 4 years ago
  • A: Yes, the West End Safety Gate is a pressure-mounted gate that does not require drilling when installing in a doorway or hallway. To install this gate at the top of a staircase, please use the included hardware kit.

Q: Is there a way to turn off the auto-close feaure and keep the gate open?

submitted by millipicnic - 4 years ago
  • A: Thank you for your question. The West End Safety Gate has an auto-close and hold-open feature. To activate the hold-open feature, open the gate door at least 90 degrees in either direction. If the gate door is opened past 90 degrees, the door will stay open.

Q: Will this gate work with molding? I have molding along the bottom of the wall and then (obviously) none where the top part would be

submitted by kimmmmmmm - 5 years ago
  • A: Yes, the West End Safety Gate accommodates baseboard molding. Please make sure the gate is installed flush to the floor and adjust the top and bottom tension bolts to accommodate the doorway opening.

I have 2 other summer infant baby gates. I like the color and the set up isn’t too bad since I’ve installed this product before. The latch is different as it has two prongs. One prong wasn’t working with the button, but once I lifted the gate up, it opened no problem. So Make sure to pull the button back and THEN lift to open the gate. I like that it can stay open at 90 degrees. I like that you can choose to have it open both directions or only one direction. It works to keep my kids away from our home gym & treadmill. I installed between 2 walls and used the pressure mounts. We have the 2 other gates at the bottom and top of our stairs as pressure mounts as well due to the configuration of our stairs.

The gate is beautiful and looks very sturdy. But it is a absolute pain! I have several gates and this one is by far the most difficult to open. I need to use both hands to open it, the second notch on the top doesn’t pull back with the top one, so I have to hold the frame of the gate to force it open. I double checked to make sure everything was square and not twisted. I’m extremely disappointed and would NOT recommend to anyone in a daily use situation.

Awful gate in wider areas!

We purchased this to keep our dog away from the from the front door. It’s a great looking gate but awful to operate. We use the gate with 2 extensions in a 48” opening. It is not screwed to the wall because we were going to paint. The constantly buckle. This makes the gate move around making our walls completely scratched up. Both top & bottom latches do not line up making it impossible to close the gate correctly. Because of this, our dog has either pushed through the gate and/or pushed it right over on a number of occasions. I can not wait to replace it!

Works well after six months. It takes some tinkering to get the gate to close and the pin at the bottom to catch as the gate swings back. I found that one needed to be careful that fieverything was perpendicular. It is a beautifully made product that, once adjusted, has taken no further fiddling. One note of caution: You may trip on the bottom brace if you do not have some way to remind yourself it is there. I used a night light to remind me. After a week or so, I subconsciously knew it was there and automatically step over it now.

Meh, it's super hard to open/close and has been a hassle for every single guest that has visited so far, it's damaged the walls. It's sturdy for life the first few months, so you keep it. The you'll find that the door hinge springs bust out of their housing so the door swings croooked and we constantly have to reattach it. It takes so much effort bust to get this to properly latch. The floor bar is especially tall and people trip on it. The wood looks neon orange, nothing like the photo. Just have had much better extra wood gates before.

Very sturdy! Read all instructions BEFORE assembly and use. It looks crooked until the tension knobs are completely tightened. Also, you lift up on the gate as you push button. I love the automatic closing door. Or it can be left completely opened in either direction. Would definitely recommend

Best gate - tighten bolts ALL THE WAY, LIFT gate to open

5 out of 5 stars

Goodfooddude - 2 years ago
Pro-tips: Read the instructions, folks. So many comments about "bent" metal or "tabs" not working. That is installer error. You need to *tighten* the bolts ALL THE WAY for the seemingly "bent" gap to close. This is not a defect, it's a function called tension. #physics Then, to open the gate you need to pull the top tab *AND* LIFT the gate at the same time, NOT just pull the top tab. It's not a defect, it's a function...again...called tension. Also, I haven't found a better gate, in fact I have two because of it mostly due to the wide opening and sturdy metal frame. We open both nearly daily at our house.

When you slide the button to open at the top, it only moves the top pin. Bottom pin doesn’t open. Thus the gate won’t open. Other people have complained about same issue. Common problem. Have to return.

Found the double pin system at the top to be very cumbersome and confusing. The bottom pin would only release if the tension was loose which didn't seem safe to me. Bottom latch system was really hard to use and while this gate says it comes with self-closing properties, only the top latches, not the bottom. Returned it once thinking it was defective, but it turns out this is actually how the product was designed!!! Yikes. Super frustrating. Would NOT recommend
