Great Filter; Bad Packaging

The filter does the job for a reasonable price. However, now that the filters are no longer bagged before boxing the carbon dust gets all over the other products. Cleaning up the products was not easy. Bring back the plastic bagging of the filters!
Working well with a reeves turtle

Have been using for about 3 months now. Overall working good. We feed our reeves turtle twice a day in seperate container then place him back in the tank. It helps keeping food crud out of the the tank. We're cleaning the tank monthly, full drain and flush, swapping out the filters. Water is staying clear. It would be nice if they sold 12 packs of the filters for 6 months and save on packaging. We run our tank just above the minimim water level due to the size of the turtle. We don't want the water too deep. We've run low and had the sucking sound, just added a couple quarts of water. Sucking sound gone.
So annoyed

I purchased this a couple weeks ago and just installed it in my paludarium about three days ago, two of which it ran without my frog in there to filter the new tank water. It is currently 1am where I am and the filter began to make a sloshing sound (like someone sucking through a straw in an empty cup). I proceeded to get up and adjust it slightly because I thought plants were stuck in it. I moved the plants away and then it started buzzing loudly. After that I went to check on it a second time and at this point it stopped working entirely. I tried to change the filter because I thought that would have been the issue, it wasn’t. I also tried to plug it into a different outlet to no avail. Saying that I’m upset with the product is an understatement. I nearly crushed it in my hands because I’m so extremely irate. Now my poor frog has no filter until tomorrow after I get out of work and unfortunately I’ll be limited to this one because I am a broke young adult. I am going to exchange this one and I swear to all things holy if this one doesn’t work after 3 days too I will most likely go feral. I am absolutely positively furious.

This works for a couple months then it start to make noise the motor is clogged but there is no way to open it to clean the motor so clogged and reduced suction power. This is my second one the first one came with my tank as a set it stopped working motor crapped out. This would be good if you could open it up to clean the motor. I use it for my turtle tank and clean it often I remove all the water and scrub the tank. I don’t do partial water removal and never use treated tap water only purified filtered drinking water and occasionally spring water. I scoop the left over food after the turtle eats and waste everyday. They’re no large waste or food. Its tiny bits and distresser leaves a slimy film on the filter clogs the motor. Bad design no way of cleaning motor and reduced suction. This only work normally for about 4-6 months. I don’t recommend it.

Thank you for your comments. This filter does actually open up for removal and cleaning of the impeller. The motor can also be cleaned out. We recommend doing this monthly. So that we can help you, email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.

Reading the reviews here I had to leave a mostly good review. Sorry everyone else thought that a filter would clean their tank for them but that's not how anything works. You still need to do a water change weekly. You still have to clean the pump a few times a year. I've had mine for 5 years now and this thing never quits. If yours stops pumping unplug it, take it out, remove the gunk, give it a good scrub, and put it back. Or better yet give your pets to someone who knows how to take care of a pet. My only reason for 4 stars is the replaceable filters are as but pricey. I would prefer to buy the screens and keep the plastic frames and replace the charcoal myself but this isn't an option.
Filtration poor on 3 inches of water

I purchased the repto filter a week ago and previously had great experience with the same type of filtration for an aquatic turtle tank. I purchased the large version and after 3 days of use the pump inside the fall runs dry and the filter bags won't allow water flow. This makes the set up very noisy with extremely poor filtration. I find that the filter bags on both sides of the pump are not quite allowing enough flow for actual filtration and maybe with a sturdier plastic housing instead of a filter bag the filtration would improve.

Thank you for your review. This sounds like either a clog somewhere or the water level is too low. The motor must be fully covered. So that we can help you with this filter, please email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.

The filter itself is ok but the suction cups suck they slide so the whole filter ends up almost submerged in water

We are new turtle owners and the filters aren’t working at all. The water is incredibly dirty and cloudy. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for sharing your experience. Turtles are definitely messy animals and require a good deal of maintenance. So that we can help you, please email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.
Loud noises

I have one large reptofilter that has always worked great! However I tried two small ones and now a new large one and they all make this terrible rattling noise. I’ve taken apart the large filter and readjusted the pump and impeller multiple times and I can’t get it to stop rattling, which makes my turtle go insane . It’s a 50/50 chance whether you get a good one or a bad one.

I purchased this product two months ago for my tank. I have had issues with it constantly, the water sometimes does not come out. It will be plugged in and not filtering water. It would make a loud noise and then eventually some water would come out every once in a while. Finally this morning it comely stopped working. I am extremely disappointed with this product. Also, the suction cups are constant coming off and I have to spend 15-20 minutes trying to get them back in place. I would HIGHLY not recommend or purchase this product again. My brother is also beginning to have the same issue with his filter that he purchased lass than a month ago. My boyfriend also has a larger version of this filter and is experiencing the same issues. We all purchased this filter between 1-3 months ago.
1 reply from Consumer Relations team - 5 years ago
Thank you for your review. We are disappointed you are having issues, but it sounds like a simple maintenance problem. Most likely the filter has either pulled something into the impeller that you need to remove or your water level is too low. With regards to the suction cups, that is unusual. So that our team can help you, email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.
Could Be Better

I bought the filter off of a recommendation from a video. As soon as I installed it there have been issues. For one, the bottom suction cup came off. No matter how I have tried I cannot get it back in. This of course led to decreased filtration as instead of the water being forced through the filtration media, half of it is blown out the back. The other issue is that the lid does not fit correctly. I have attempted to get it to sit flush, but each time it pops back up. This would not be more than a cosmetic issue if my frog had not decided that inside the filter was a grand place to hide.

Thank you for your review. This is certainly disappointing. So that we can help correct these issues for you, please email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com. The representative you speak with can also help with warranty support, if necessary.

I bought this product for my turtle hoping it would work properly. I have only had this filter for a month now and it is not working. Do not recommend for a full time filter.

Thank you for taking time to reach out to us. Remove the bottom of the filter and take out the impeller for cleaning. Most likely is just clogged and can be up and running again in no time. A representative is reaching out to you directly but you can also email them at petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.

I bought this about two years ago, and I have used it in several tanks. All the tanks I used it for were under 7 gallons (I have the smaller of the two filters), but contained animals that create a lot of waste (slidders, tadpoles, snapping turtles..etc/lots of waste). I have read a lot of negative reviews on this filter, and I think thats because people wants this filter to make the water crystal clear. If you have a reptile or amphibian, the water will be gross and murky; look at the natural habbitiat your critter came from, its less than likely to be crystal clear water. I am very happy with this filter and will purchase more in the future.

I bought this filter for a small turtle tank (a ten gallon tank with less than 3 inches of water). It has not kept it clean at all and when trying to move it, the suction cup came off and I could not get it back in.

I got this for my salamanders and it works great... until it doesn't! The electromagnet that turns the propeller keeps sticking and it's a pain to take it out of my tank and unstuck it. To top it off, you need to place rocks or a little fish net around it or it'll suck up a salamander's delicate little fins, limbs, or tail. I also had to place a rock in front of it to diver the filtered water away from getting immediately recirculated which otherwise would make the rest of the water in my 5 gallon tank go stale. Definitely needs work but as far as I know, there's no other filter as cheap and as small as this one so it'll have to do for now.
1 reply from Consumer Relations team - 6 years ago
We are sorry to hear you aren't completely happy with this filter, Sallymander keeper. The impeller should not be sticking, and if it is this would be covered under warranty. The impeller will get clogged with debris, algae, buildup of various materials and so forth so regular cleaning of the impeller and motor are part of the maintenance of any filter system. In regards to placing a rock in front of the filter system, that is definitely not necessary as it properly circulates the water throughout the tank and will not leave any stale pockets. For more help with this product, simply email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com.

I have had this filter for about 6 months for my 1 aquatic turtle. I have never had an issue with it. It starts right up and is very quite. I love that it excepts the tetra/whisper filter cartridges. Very quick and easy to change filters. Love this style of filter as well, if the power goes up in your home, since this sits in the water it will not run dry when the power comes back on. LOVE IT!!!!
