About the Book

After Ingrid Erikson jeopardizes her career, she fears her future will remain irrevocably broken. But when the man who shattered her belief in happily-ever-afters offers her a sealed envelope from her late best friend, Ingrid is sent on a hunt for a hidden manuscript and must confront her past before she can find the healing she's been searching for.

From the Back Cover

Three friends. Two broken promises. One missing manuscript.

As a senior acquisitions editor for Fog Harbor Books in San Francisco, Ingrid Erikson has rejected many a manuscript for lack of defined conflict and dramatic irony--two elements her current life possesses in spades. In the months following the death of her childhood best friend and international bestselling author Cecelia Campbell, Ingrid has not only lost her ability to escape into fiction due to a rare trauma response, but she's also desperate to find the closure she's convinced will come with Cecelia's missing final manuscript.

After Ingrid jeopardizes her career, she fears her future will remain irrevocably broken. But then Joel Campbell--the man who shattered her belief in happily-ever-afters--offers her a sealed envelope from his late cousin, Cecelia, asking Joel and to put their differences aside and retrieve a mysterious package in their coastal Washington hometown.

Honoring Cecelia's last request will challenge their convictions and test their loyalties, but through it all, will Ingrid and Joel be brave enough to uncover a twice-in-a-lifetime love?

"The Words We Lost is thought-provoking and tender, capturing the transformative beauty of surviving."--T.I. LOWE, bestselling author of Under the Magnolias

"A poignant, masterful exploration of the enduring power of friendship and love."--IRENE HANNON, author of the bestselling Hope Harbor series

An un-putdownable novel of romance, mystery, and friendship

Thanks to LibraryThing and Bethany House Publishers for an advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. Friendship, grief, and forgiveness are the hope-filled themes of this absorbing 5-star novel that can be summarized as “Three friends. Two broken promises. One missing manuscript.” The novel begins with Ingrid trying to redeem her professional reputation as senior acquisitions editor at a San Francisco publishing house by locating a missing manuscript written by Cece, her recently deceased best friend and award-winning novelist. The present day story alternates with the past (written by Cece) as she explains what has happened via a history she wrote and left for Ingrid and Joel to read together. The characters are all believable, the story is captivating, the villain is thoroughly devious. Author Nicole Deese skillfully describes the beautiful Pacific Northwest landscape as well as the emotions and struggles of the three main characters. Perhaps this story is especially authentic because it’s based on the author’s own grief experience – she lost her little sister at the age of 26, the same age as her character Cece. Ingrid describes her relationship with Cece and Joel as the novel begins, “The three of us had been something wonderful once upon a time, sharing a bond in friendship that was almost too good to be true, but it hadn’t been that way for many years now. It was death that had divided our original trio into a duo, and death, once again, that had divided our duo into two broken individuals who’d lived as little more than strangers up until a week ago.” This un-putdownable novel is a romance, a mystery, and a story of love, loyalty and the power of friendship. I highly recommend it.

Masterfully Woven Together

Nicole Deese has written another beautiful novel, The Words We Lost. She has quickly become an author I will automatically read when I see her name. Her books are deep, gritty, and carefully crafted. While this novel deals with grief, it is not as heavy of a read as anticipated. I actually put off reading this novel because of that. Ingrid needs a miracle to keep her job. So, when Joel shows up with an envelope with their names, she wonders if she might have found what she was looking for. However, choosing to go back to her hometown leads her on an unexpected journey, with a discovery Ingrid and Joel never knew existed. Unfortunately for Ingrid's career, it is not what she expected. Will she find what she is looking for? The Words We Lost is a powerful book of friendship, love, loss, and second chances. From the beginning, I was rooting for Joel and Ingrid to get back together. As the story progressed and I realized what tore them apart, I wanted it even more but wondered if it was possible. Prepare yourself because once the story hits its stride it is impossible to put down. I was mad at myself for not giving myself more time to read when I had to set it aside to sleep (it was HARD!). There are many layers to this story, and they are masterfully woven together. There is so much more I want to say about this story, but I don't want to give a hint of spoilers. The Words We Lost is a must-read. My copy will be staying on my "keeper" shelf. On a side note, while this is labeled "Christian Fiction," it is more mentions of prayer and church. It is not heavy on the "Christian" side, which I know can be off-putting to some readers. Thank you to Bethany House for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“I can’t erase the darkness for you, but I can be the one to hold the light when you’re ready to come home.” Oh, my friends. This is one of those reviews when my emotions about a book are so big that I struggle to fit them into the tiny box of words at my disposal. The Words We Lost is an absolutely stunning story and undoubtedly one of my favorite reads of the year. Beautiful friendships. A lost manuscript. Broken promises. A journey of hope and healing. A second chance romance. I don’t want to say too much because I think this is one where you should go in blind, but be prepared to feel all the feels. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster but the ride was so beautiful and heart-stirring that I never wanted to get off. ❤️🧭⚓ “I’m learning that much like love, grief is meant to be shared.” Truly, I cannot recommend this book enough. Fans of Courtney Walsh and Becky Wade should definitely check this one out! This was my first book by Nicole Deese but you can be sure that her ENTIRE backlist was just bumped way, way up on my tbr. I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

The Price of Friendship

Ingrid had once been part of an extraordinary friendship that included Cece and Joel. As teenagers, they thought they would never live their lives without each other. But Ingrid and Joel's broken engagement shattered the group. Ingrid went on to become an editor who helped Cece get her first book published. When that exploded into an international best-selling series, both Cece and Ingrid reaped the benefits. The world was excitedly awaiting the last installment in the series when Ingrid, and everyone else, was shocked by Cece's death. Since then, Ingrid has barely functioned, and lost an important ability to do her job. Her assistant has been covering for her, but her hard-nosed boss has caught on. The boss is only keeping Ingrid employed in the hopes that she will uncover Cece's last installment. For years, Ingrid has had nothing but anger for Joel, so returning to their hometown for the book search is torture. She is informed that Cece left Joel and her a package. When opened, it contains a memoir of the three's friendship penned by Cece during her final weeks, along with her last request that Ingrid and Joel read it--together. Despite Ingrid's love for Cece, can she do this thing with Joel? What good will this do towards keeping her job? Many hidden things come to light in this tale, and mysteries are solved. Shocking things are revealed to Cece. Overall, the special friendship the three shared continues to both affect and enrich their lives, even with one member missing. I loved this book. Once, I was part of an exceptional friendship. Then one of our group walked away, and later, one passed away--and that passing almost killed the remaining two of us. However, the years we shared gave us memories, both wonderful and bittersweet, that continue affecting us, and enriching us. If you have ever been blessed with such a friendship, or wished for one, read this book. Even if you haven't, get this five-star book, you will love it. Thank you, Bethany House, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

I am not sure why I find it easy to write reviews for good books, or even some great books, but struggle to write reviews for books that touch me to my very core, books whose characters have so much to teach me about living a life fully relying on the love of God. The Words We Lost is just such a book. Nicole Deese is no stranger to grief, and unselfishly shares from the root of her experience. Her characters aren't limited to the experience of grief; their relationships with God are also impacted by feelings of abandonment, addiction, and anxiety. Readers will be blessed to wade through and sometimes plunge into troubled waters with them, and even more so to surface on the other side with the One who calms the waters. The Words We Lost is one of those rare finds that is finely crafted and leaves its mark on the reader for its beauty and the truths it reveals. I am very grateful to have received a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishers without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

"We can't change the time we've spent, just how we choose to spend the time we have left." Wow. I've been a fan of Nicole Deese's writing for some time now, but every time I read a new book from this fabulous author, I'm astounded all over again how beautifully she weaves raw, aching human emotions into a masterpiece. The magic she wields with her written words is beyond descriptors and I loved the contrast between Ingrid's first-person, present tense narrative and Cece's third-person, past tense journey of their friendship. The author stitches overwhelming grief, guilt, regret, anger, hopelessness, and despair alongside loyalty, undying friendship, faith, love, hope, and second chance to create an unforgettable quilt of forgiveness and redemption. It's a must-read for all women's fiction and contemporary romance fans everywhere. Ingrid was an easy heroine to love, even in her utterly broken state. Her past was difficult but the reader doesn't know the depth of her pain and shame until halfway through the book. I loved how the author drew me in and pieced together Ingrid's story one event at a time, wrapping each hurt with love and care from Cece and Joel. And Joel.....he's a completely sigh-worthy hero. Though he doesn't have a voice in the storyline, his loyal, steadfast, compassionate heart shone clearly through his actions. And Cece is a mighty force in both of their lives, even if we don't actually get to meet her. This book definitely goes in my Top 20 reads of 2023 list. I received the book from Bethany House via Interviews and Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
