Review Quotes
You're going to want to remember the title. Liars details the summers of a girl who harbors a dark secret, and delivers a satisfying, but shocking twist ending. --Breia Brissey, Entertainment Weekly This mindblowing YA thriller from E. Lockhart will make you glad you're the 99 percent...And that's about all we can tell you when it comes to the story of 'We Were Liars, ' the book by E. Lockhart that everyone will be reading, and re-reading, this summer. It's twisty, it's mysterious, and it's got a surprise ending that'll knock your socks off.--Kat Rosenfield, MTV News Surprising, thrilling, and beautifully executed in spare, precise, and lyrical prose, Lockhart spins a tragic family drama, the roots of which go back generations. And the ending? Shhhh. Not telling. (But it's a doozy)...This is poised to be big. --Booklist, starred review Lockhart has created a mystery with an ending most readers won't see coming, one so horrific it will prompt some to return immediately to page one to figure out how they missed it. At the center of it is a girl who learns the hardest way of all what family means, and what it means to lose the one that really mattered to you. --Publishers Weekly, starred review Riveting, brutal and beautifully told. --Kirkus, starred review The ending is a stunner that will haunt readers for a long time to come. --School Library Journal, starred review A taut psychological mystery marked by an air of uneasy disorientation...The ultimate reveal is shocking both for its tragedy and for the how-could-I-have-not-suspected-that? feeling it leaves us with. But we didn't, which is Lockhart's commendable triumph. --The Horn Book, starred review "This is a love story as much as it is a psychological mystery...Astonishing. --Shelf Awareness, starred review
"[a] haunting, sophisticated mystery...a novel so twisty and well-told that it will appeal to older readers as well as to adolescents." --The Wall Street Journal
"Irresistible premise for this ticking time bomb of a novel." --The New York Times Book Review A Lockhart YA is always a treat and this is no exception...The glimpse we get into a life of privilege, a lifestyle most of us can only imagine, is insightful and thrilling. The ending will shock the mose jaded of readers, we promise! --RT Book Reviews There's trouble in paradise at the opening of National Book Award finalist and Printz honoree E. Lockhart's shattering yet ultimately hopeful YA novel . . . and neither family nor reader will ever be the same. --Library Journal
It's a nearly perfect story, and it's utterly absorbing. --Bustle, A YA Best Book of the Year
No book on this summer's reading list will have readers immobilized in their hammocks more than E. Lockhart's We Were Liars..... This book has that surprise quality--like Elizabeth Wein's Code Name Verity--that makes readers scramble back through hungrily devoured chapters and wonder in admiration: Could I have seen this coming? Did I miss any clues? --Newsday
Like a shard of glass, WE WERE LIARS glitters and shines, then cuts deep. E. Lockhart has truly outdone herself with this masterful, darkly mesmerizing portrait of a fractured family ruined by the excess of wealth. Humming with rich descriptions and razor-sharp intelligence, the story of Cadence Sinclair Eastman will both inspire and haunt readers for years to come. --Sarah Pitre, Forever Young Adult Perception often is not reality -- and it certainly is not in WE WERE LIARS. This is a look at what "a perfect world" looks like on the inside and how it unravels once one of the players sees it for what it is. Pitch perfect in both plotting and character development.
--Carol Fitzgerald, Book Reporter The must-read contemporary novel so far this year is definitely E. Lockhart's stellar We Were Liars, a rich, stunning summer mystery with a sharp twist that will leaving you dying to talk about the book with a pal or ten. --Sonia Charaipotra, Parade A haunting tale about how families live within their own mythologies. It’s definitely a slow burn, however, the events align perfectly and then quickly it knocks the breathe out of you and leaves you utterly devastated. Such a beautiful yet tragic story. If you can stick with it, you’ll like it, maybe even love it.

I didn't realize this was a YA novel so maybe if I was in my teens or early 20s I would have thought it was a better book. But as an older adult this book was very boring. I would agree with what the other 1 and 2 star reviewers are saying. Slow to get into, not much of a plot. I guessed what the twist was quite a bit before it was revealed. I read the notes from the author and feel she really put herself into this book and it made me feel bad for not liking it. But I have to give my honest review. I hardly have time to read, and look forward to my summer vacation book and I feel this was a waste of my down time on vacation. I left the book behind in the room because I would not even pass it along to a friend like I normally do.

Was ever so excited to read this book, however it is horrible. It’s very all over the board. Took a long time to get into it. Finally I did, an was just super disappointed in it. It’s like she rambles on about characters but no real story to go with it.
Honestly.. just no

4⭐️ Within the first couple pages this book hooked me in. I loved the map of the island in the front with the family tree to refer back too. I also liked how it was based near Martha’s Vineyard in MA. (so close to me). Toward the middle I was questioning what was going on in the book and if it still related to the beginning and how I thought it was going to go, all of a sudden a MASSIVE plot twist hit, and once again I couldn’t put it down. The author did a fantastic job at making you believe what she wanted you too. I wish it didn’t end so quickly. Now that family of liars is out I will be picking that up to get more of the story. At the end of the book the author had a section of how she got the book published, what she changed, notes to herself throughout writing it, notes from the characters to each other, and all the recipes that the characters had which I thought was pretty interesting! Sad it’s over 🫠 RIP (IYKYK) 😭

I really struggled to get into this. Characters and story line very drawn out. Nothing interesting happened until halfway through the book. The writing style is terrible. I agree with another review that says poor handling of racism. The ending is neither thrilling or shocking as the book says.
really sad really good

I love love LOVE this book! The depth of the characters within the family, the plot twist that makes everything come full circle is perfect. Once finished, read the prequel to learn more about the family dynamic and why things are the way they were on the island. 10/10 for both
Super short and worth the read!

I understand why this book is not everyone's cup of tea, Lockhart plays around with structure quite a bit. This is something I actually really enjoyed. Her style is truly what made the storytelling. She often uses shortened lines when emotional information is being relayed, so that it appears like poetry. This changes the effect it has on the reader so that we are forced to stop in the intensity of each word or phrase. I thought this stylistic choice was the book's strong suit. It was a great story, perfect for a YA audience, but I do think its enjoyable for a wide range of age groups. The plot twist legitimately surprised me and had me crying. I was shocked, but I am usually shocked with plot twists. For me it came out of left field, but I recognize that perhaps for others it was obvious? As I've included in the photos, there is a section for bonus content at the end, and I found this content to be super interesting! The author actually addresses the fact that this book will not be everyone's cup of tea. She explains why and how she made the decisions she did, and includes content from her first drafts. My favorite section of bonus content is the handwritten letters from Gat. They absolutely destroyed me, and supplemented the heart-wrenching ending very well. The intense emotion I have coming out of the book is primarily because of these letters. It would not be the same without them.
Not great, but keeps you interested

This book was ok. It held my interest for the most part. The twist seemed predictable to me… maybe because I read it in the reviews and was expecting something to happen. I just didn’t like the way it resolved. I found it annoying. I feel like the story would have been better without “the twist”

It was pretty boring and I hate saying that. It introduces probably more than12 people in the first like 11 pages. That for me was overwhelming. The author includes a family tree which is super annoying to flip back and forth to. There is a crazy twist that you wouldn’t see coming but I was disappointed in the entire book. The writing was super strange. At one point the main character says her dad pulled out a gun and shoots her in the heart. Took me a moment to realize she wasn’t meaning he literally shot her in the heart and she was speaking figuratively...
Not good, long winded for no reason.

I just can’t handle the style of writing 150 pages in and I’m confused and annoyed the story hasn’t picked up. Donated to my local library.
