Q: Has anyone found a way to get rid of the awful smell this leaves behind?

A: I ran many loads before the scent diminished. I won’t buy again. The scent was awful. It was a chemically lemon scent.

A: Great question, Yoni. Our Cascade Platinum Dishwasher Cleaner is intended for use only in an empty machine. If the cleaner has been used by mistake with dishes in the cycle, then you should keep the dishes in your dishwasher and run another cycle with normal automatic dishwashing detergent. As long as you follow the recommended amounts as directed, they will not damage your plumbing system with a properly functioning septic tank. Q: My dishwasher is at least 10 years old. Is this product safe to use in it? I use Cascade powder, I've never used a pod in it.

A: All of our detergents are safe for use in properly operating residential automatic dishwashers. This includes automatic dishwashers with older porcelain, current polypropylene and stainless steel interiors, and portable dishwashers.

I bought these because my dishwasher had been smelling a tad funky, and the box promised this would "help eliminate ... odors in your machine." HAH! Instead, after using one, not just the dishwasher, but my entire apartment reeks of the most godawful, foul, cheap-perfume stench, and it's too cold to open my windows. I'd much rather have the worst dishwasher funk than this.

If the dishwasher has a filter, remove the filter and clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's possible dishwasher cleaner broke up lingering food residue which is stuck in the filter. To remove the scent from the dishwasher, fill both detergent cups with white vinegar. If dishwasher isn't designed with dispenser cups, put two cups of white vinegar in a non metallic bowl and place it on the bottom rack of the dishwasher. I love this product!! We run the dishwasher twice a day everyday. The dishwasher starts to smell and baking soda and vinegar help but this product makes a huge difference. I love the scent, and the inside of my dishwasher is left shiny and super clean. I love that and it’s effortless to get the result. Just put the tab in like you normally would and run the dishwasher on your cleaning cycle. I use this about once a month.

My dishes are always dirty I end up hand washing them after each cycle. I even rinse them off before putting them in to the dishwasher. I put the pod on the compartment and then there will be times I throw it in either way my dishes still come out dirty. I will be switching pod brands.

We used the Cascade dishwasher cleaner. Ran it in an empty dishwasher per the instructions. Then we ran the dishwasher with a load of dishes. All the pllastic storage containers came out cloudy. This has never happened before, so I don’t think this is a case of hard water. We ran a second cleansing pack in an empty dishwasher and followed the instructions. The next load of dishes we ran came out cloudy again. Now we are handwashing everything to be safe. Thank you for wasting our money and time. Oh, and the water in those empty loads and to re-wash dishes that should have been clean.

Does not clean as well as afresh brand. You can only use with an empty dishwasher. Afresh brand allows you to run with a full or empty dishwasher.

This product leaves a terrible fragrance in your dishwasher that permeates your dishes, especially drinkware. I used one pack on an empty dishwasher as directed and immediately noticed the smell when I opened the dishwasher. I ran three additional cycles on my empty dishwasher and the smell remains. I am now a full week following the cleaning and am forced to rewash drinkware by hand because the smell permeates, and you can taste it. It is not only with plasticware, but all my drinkware was affected. This is a terrible product. I researched other sites, and many reviews mention the issue with the smell and aftertaste.

Please know, we’re very sorry to learn this has happened, as it’s not something we expect. Our Quality Team assures us that, when used as directed, what you’ve described shouldn’t occur. Some dishwashers have a filter. If yours has one, be sure you’ve removed it and cleaned it according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's possible the dishwasher cleaner broke up lingering food residue which is stuck in the filter. Once cleaned, then run a sanitizing cycle, or the heaviest and hottest option your machine has. This product leaves an extreme strong scent that is attaching to anything washed in the dishwasher. It can be tasted/smelled and is awful. Beware, I'm on around 5 of running the dishwasher to try and remove it.

Additionally, some materials, such as cast iron and plastic, can absorb odors. It worked, but it left a strong chemical fragrance in the dishwasher that filled the kitchen and, even after running an empty rinse load to try to wash it out, made the following loads of dishes stink! I wanted to clean my dishwasher, not coat it in fragrance! I'm going back to lemi shine. It's just as effective and doesn't have an overwhelming fragrance.

I really like this Cascade Platinum Dishwasher Cleaner. It has a nice clean fragrance that makes my whole kichen smell nice when i open the door of the dishwasher. I normally leave my dishwasher door open to be sure it dries out inside. I do this at night while in bed and close in the morning when i get up. I don't like closing the door with dampness in the dishwash. No other cleaner ive used ever had any smell. I'm sticking with this one plus i like the pods. Some complain about the fragrance but there are others that have no fragrance on the market, so there are options.

Although I think this product does help maintain a fresh dishwasher, I’m not sure why the “pod” does not break down completely during the cycle. Directions never say you have to use heated dry setting, so that may be why ( I did not use heated dry setting)

What happened to cascade original? I never had a problem with it. With cascade complete, (completely useless) I have to rinse my dishes, run them through the dishwasher (with cascade complete) and then hand wash some of them. I rarely ever had to do that with cascade original. I have looked all over for the original and can't find it. Are you not still making it? Please let me know so I can stop looking if you are not and try and find another brand that cleans worth a ****. Sorry but I miss the original.

Cascade is destroying my vintage drinking glasses. It leaves a white residue on all of my antique glasses. Vinegar does not remove it. Supposedly, the CHEMICALS in Cascade cling to food and drink residue on glasses, but it you wash a glass that has only had water in it, it destroys the glass by leaving a chemical residue on it. I have a whole house water softener, so it is not due to hard water.

Doesn't matter to me how well this product does, or doesn't, clean the dishwasher. Now on the 4th run of dishwasher after using one tablet, trying to rid the overwhelming fragrance scent from the machine. New dishwasher (less than 6 months old), and have a sink full of dishes waiting to be washed. Have read the scent transfers to clean dishes. Who in their right mind thinks it is a good thing to put such an overwhelming fragrance that does not go away once cleaning cycle is done? Not only does it not go away after one use, but have to run who knows how many cycles to make the fragrance go away? Ridiculous.
