So good I probably don't need it

This watch is too good for me. I am a competitive martial artist and I run frequently for training, so I figured having a dedicated smartwatch for running would be useful. And it is - the Forerunner 955 has provided me with such detailed tracking and metrics that I have become a much better runner! The thing is, I don't need 95% of the things that it tells me. What even is "vertical oscillation?" And why is mine so bad? I have no clue. In that sense, I probably should have gone for the Venu or maybe a cheaper Forerunner - I'm a pretty serious athlete, but unless you're a truly elite runner, this watch is probably too advanced for you. That being said, everything this watch does - wild running metrics included - it does fantastically well. The sleep tracking is so accurate I sometimes have trouble believing it, and the HR and pulse ox sensors are always reliable (with the occasional few seconds where my heart rate shoots up and the watch is slow to track it). The stress and body battery features are useful too, and usually align with how I feel. I love how detailed the fitness metrics are as well - knowing my VO2 max and lactate threshold has been so helpful for me in improving my running! The pace tracker and GPS are darn near flawless as well, and the personalized running plans are very useful. Don't even get me started on the training readiness - I have a habit of overtraining, so this feature has been great in helping me avoid excessive fatigue and pain. Overall, this is a must-buy for top-tier runners, and well worth the money for anyone who calls themselves an athlete. Keep in mind, however, that you really don't need most of the things it can do unless you are at a very high level of competition.

This watch is great. Using it to train for an ironman. Only issue i have is during swimming it won't count the laps you train with a kickboard. Also during strength training your reps may need to be adjusted but besides those small issue I love it.

    Too much

I purchased this watch because it had the longest GPS mode battery life. It replaced a five year old Forerunner 245. I don’t listen to recorded music while running, preferring the music of birds, the wind and my heart. This watch every day pops up with “Tip - hold down for music”. And every time I save a run it forces me to select an effort level and a how I feel icon. This is data I am not interested in and it should be easy to tell it not to ask but I have not yet figured out how. The watch is also too big for my skinny runner wrist. I do like the battery life, the touch screen and the spare watch band loop that came with it. Also I find it very cumbersome to create a new activity type versus the old 245.

As a lifelong apple user concerned about leaving the ecosystem, I sought a better alternative. Despite my daily workouts and cardio routine, I had issues with Apple Watch battery life and performance tracking. My fiancée’s Farming Forerunner 65 series impressed me, and I found the 955 cheaper with better data. I’ve been delighted with the watch’s lightness, long battery life, and accurate performance tracking.

Had a few issues here and there with workout recording. The battery life is exceptional….. as long as you don’t have the hr monitor running. Turn the screen brightness down, and have a very simple watch face if you want to take advantage of the battery life. Could be better overall but salvageable.

I recently upgraded from a 935 to a 955. I am enjoying the added features, but the battery life is disappointing so far. The 955 is supposed to last 14 days in smartwatch mode (I am not currently working out) but is down below 20% in less than a week.

Upgraded from 945 to 955 nice to have a heart rate monitor that is more accurate as mine was always reading so high and elevation is accurate, as mine was reading too much elevation gain.

I’ve mine for a while now maybe about two years now. One of my favorite features is the navigation/bactrack, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used. It’s accurate and it has help me to navigate my way back to the car safely. Another of many features I like is the Garmin customizable workouts I can download to my watch. There are too many features to mentioned but I am really happy to had used to on many ultras as well, up to a 50 miler. Chargable on the go, an A plus!! And now I just got my daughter hooked up to the Garmin family too.

Had the device for a while, then today got the Blue Triangle of Death on starting a run with GPS. Had to do a full factory reset to recover the unit. Lost all settings and spent lots of time rebuilding it. Garmins Software issue caused me a ton of incovenience and wasted my time. No fix yet available so GPS use is off the menu for me.

Everything I need in a triathlon training tool

    5 out of 5 stars
    Secret_treaties - 3 months ago

Background: Re-started triathlon training in August 2024 after a 20 year break. While my old HR monitor and cycle computers (cadence, speed distance) still worked, so many technical tools are now available beyond what used to be available. That, and I bought a used Cervelo P4 that had a power meter that only was ANT+ compliant. Problem: So, I needed a new bike computer (that was ANT+ compliant) for the power meter, and maybe update my old training tools. Research: After trying a number of options like running with my phone (Iphone was not Ant+ compliant), I identified garmin smart watches and bike computers as likely candidates. More research narrowed the watches to Garmin forerunner 955 and 965. Purchase: A post holiday season sale enticed me to purchase Garmin Forerunning 955 and the HRM pro+. Due to budget, I purchased the watch before a bike computer. Review: After Two weeks of use, I can say that this was the best training tool I have ever purchased. I set up the watch to display everything I need in a bike computer display and running display. Also bought a Garmin Tacx bike trainer that seamlessly paired with the watch. Garmin Connect is easily configurable to monitor so many health points such as sleep, training load, training readiness, blood pressure, weight and so on. Workouts are easy to find or create manually. My only small annoyance so far is that while I can manually enter workouts that I did not record on the watch, the data is not included in the body battery, training load, training readiness metrics. I did not require much of a learning curve on the watch or Garmin connect. These are mostly intuitive, or a quick online search will help me find what I am looking for. I am also happy that Garmin Connect (at the moment) does not require a subscription. I also find it comfortable to wear for 24 hours. Face size is big enough and bright enough when using outdoors and indoors. So far, an excellent purchase for my needs.
