Q: The thinkness of the 4 gallon bags -- printed on the photo of the box -- says .63 MIL, but under the specifications tab, it says .98 MIL. Which is it?

Q: Can I use these as trash bags, to contribute less plastic to landfills?

A: Hi there, and thanks for your question! While these bags are most effective for gathering compostable items (e.g., food scraps) to dispose of and divert to commercial compost facilities, they can also surely be used in lieu of conventional plastic trash bags to help reduce the use of single-use traditional plastic that end up in landfills. A: Thanks for this great question! Our HoldOn bags are certified by TUV Austria under the OK Home Compost certification, which requires that the bag breaks down within 6 months in a home compost environment.

This bag claims to be 4 gallons and maybe it is under perfect laboratory conditions. It fits only my tiny 2 gallon trash. Don’t be fooled into thinking this will fit a 4 gallon trash container, or even a 3 gallon container. Trying to see how one could possible fit 4 gallons in here …

The bags are definitely compostable, but they deteriorate while being used! We are separating our organic waste per trash regulations and I thought these would be great for the food waste bin. Problem is that after only 1-2 days with a small amount of food in the bin, the bottom of the bag literally dissolves defeating the purpose of using a bag in the first place. I don’t want to have to change the bag daily, or even every two days as that is very wasteful. I’m trying doubling the bag while I use up the box of bags but I’m going to have to switch to another brand. Don’t recommend.

Had to use double bags because each bag was ripping after a couple of days. Even the double bags were ripping. I wanted to support a smaller company, but will have to go back to Hefty because those didn't rip and didn't require double bags.

So I got these because the Up & Up (17 in X 18 in X 0.5 mil) ones are no longer being sold & I bought the Gain (8.75 in X 8.25 X 1 ft 6 in X 0.5 mil) ones & they were too short. I strongly believe these bags are not the size they claim to be. They are the exact size as the gain

I've been using these since last year. I'm careful removing them from the box because I did tear one before, but otherwise they're holding up better than the other brand I tried, and they're often on sale.

Hate to be that person, but it’s torn off easily. Whenever I replace the bag, I found the bag was already torn at the bottom and waste and liquids all over the bin. This makes me have to either use 2 bags at the same time or replace it 3 times a week compared to the past practice, only change when the compost bin is full. It’s a great bag as it’s eco-friendly, but not what I’m looking for.

Bought two boxes of these on sale. The bags from one of the boxes ripped apart very easily, unlike the bags from two other brands I have tried. Because of their tendency to rip, I usually had to double these bags, which diminished their value. Most of the bags from the second box were oddly ripped (pre-cut) inside the box. Since the box itself was fine, the cuts in the bags must have occurred in the factory. I cannot use these bags for anything because they are like Swiss cheese.

I love that HoldOn is providing consumers with a great alternative to plastic, and I will continue to purchase bags from them to support that mission and goal to create less waste! However, I really wish that these small space trash bags had a drawstring or something to help them stay in place in my trash can. I find, especially in any trash can with a lid that opens and closes / an internal container, that they have more of a tendency to fall into the trash can, making them difficult to get out without getting your trash on your hands, etc. Would be great if they made a small trash bag with a drawstring! x

The bags fit the bucket nicely, and are adequately strong for up to 3 gallons of food waste. However, they are permeable and therefore some of the "juice" from the waste matter gets through the bag and into the bin. This makes it necessary to wash and dry the bin each time I take a bag of food waste out of it. That is a more frequent task than I would wish. Not a total show-stopper; just another cost of trying to be environmentally responsible. I hope the technology soon improves to keep moisture INSIDE the compostible bags.
