My favorite geode - 9 months ago
I buyed this for my 12 year old daughter that loves science and when she saw these geodes at target she wanted to use is as her science project and thanks to this she got a 10/10 and she could pass the grade even it is a little bit expensive but it doesn’t matter it’s her science project.💎
Tough to crack open but fun!

Fun activity for the kids and inquisitive minds! It does take some strength to really break apart the geodes. But once you finally do, it’s pretty neat what you find inside. I would recommend this for kids 7 and up who really can grasp the idea of what they’re trying to accomplish.
Hands on learning.

The informational packet included with the instructions was filled with interesting facts. A pair of safety goggles and a little magnifying glass were included. I only gave it 3 stars as after 35 minutes we were only able to crack 2 small rocks. Overall fun and educational.

Out of the 12 we have opened, only one has been a bit of a dud. We could not find a pocket in that geode, but perhaps we didn’t open at the right spot. These are fairly easy to open for a 12 year old with only minimal assistance from her father with heavier tools. It’s a great kit for a rock enthusiast and her desk is now filled with geode halves on display.
My kids loved this

The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC rock activity is so much fun. My kids loved to break the rocks open. They all are like a surprise. The box comes with the things pictured but doesn’t come with a chisel nor hammer.
So much fun!

My daughters not only loved breaking these with the hammer, but they love displaying them or giving them them as gifts. Very easy S.T.E.A.M project to do with the kids and learn some cool facts. I guarantee both parent and child will have fun!

We recently tried to break open 15 geodes from a STEM kit from the Nationals Geographic. My 7 year old son was excited to break open the geodes but found the process very difficult. These rocks are very thick and heavy. You have to hit them pretty hard and may be best for kids ages 10 and older. Also there will be lots of dust and tiny rock specs everywhere so it’s best to open these outside of your home with adult supervision. Lastly we were a bit disappointed to discover that none of our geodes had any of the beautiful bright colors that were displayed on the cover of the box. The game provided several minutes of entertainment but it’s just a use once and done type game.

Very fun and interactive activity! My 2 kids ages 6 and 8 started by taking the kit out onto the driveway. It included a bag of geodes and safety goggles. My daughter used her sunglasses since it only included 1 pair. We took a hammer and chisel, and using the suggested instructions, attempted to carve an outline around the geode. It really was very difficult and time consuming for young kids. We ended up trying to tap the geodes with a hammer to try to create an even crack, but they were very hard and most times would just explode apart. Ultimately, the larger geodes came apart in large pieces which looked really cool. The smaller geodes we didn't have as much luck. A few were pretty unremarkable. Overall we had fun and my kids were amazed by the beautiful crystals inside.
Amazing project for myself and my son!

As a child my parents often joked that my room might fall off the house because of the weight of all the rocks inside it. As an adult I am thrilled that my son has picked up my love of all things rock and gem. I knew I had to have this HUGE set! We had the best afternoon smashing and creating both memories and home decor. Highly recommend!

Do you have a kid who loves to break stuff? Has your kid been begging to smash things with a hammer? Too many marvel movies inspired smashing stuff? This is the toy for you! My 6yo absolutely loved getting to wear his very own sized safety glasses and smashing these open. It kept him busy outside in the summer fresh air breaking them open and admiring the geodes inside. A perfect gift for any age!

This NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Break Open 15 Premium Geodes is great! It was fun breaking the geodes and my kids love it. Some cracked open easily, and as for others, not as much but my husband helped them. The majority of the geodes were quartz although they were hoping for amethyst. They like learning about different stones and collect as much as they can. I highly recommend it!
Difficult to crack the geodes

I wanted to love this. My kids are very inquisitive and into science and I thought this would be great to keep them busy for awhile (ages 8 & 10). The box contains safety glasses (definitely needed!), magnifying glass, book with geode info, and 15 rocks of varying sizes. The directions say you need a hammer and chisel to break the rocks open. By the way, do this outside! My 10 year old tried for 20 minutes with hammer and chisel and couldn’t even get it to crack - she was incredibly frustrated. I had to hit a rock with the hammer pretty hard to get it to split open. After that, both kids started hitting the rocks directly with mixed results. We opened 8 of the 15, and all seemed to be the same kind of white sparkly geode. Needless to say, the kids were over it pretty quickly and I was left to pick up the rock shards in my backyard.

This is so much fun while being a learning tool. I enjoy watching my children do things together that they have fun doing. This allows them to be creative and they are able to keep this for a long time.
Fun Activity, but need a little strength to open

My son loves gems and chose this as a fun activity to try! The rocks were a little hard to break open and my husband ended up doing most of the work. But, my son (7yo) still enjoyed it and for some pretty geodes out of it!

My kids were so excited to get this!! They enjoyed breaking them open and seeing what was inside. This was definitely the perfect purchase for them at their ages of 8,5,4. They are already asking for another National Geographic set!

Super fun! I have an 8 and 5 year old and they both loved this! It was fun but some rocks were a little hard to break into. You will need a hammer, and we tried with a chisel but that didn’t help much. And we didn’t get much variety on the inside of the rocks, but still fun.

My son opened this immediately and started to crack open the rocks. It was fun but a one time activity. It would be nice to have a display or container for the large rock. It’s a good activity to get kids off screens!

I wanted to be super excited for these, but they are just ok. Lots of small rocks and they are extremely hard to open. Like broke a hammer trying to open them (wow) And then there was one bug one that seems really cool, but we can’t figure out how to open it! Out of the 12ish rocks, I think we were able to crack 8 successfully. Were they cool? Yes would I buy them again? Nahhhh
Kids love it!

My kids enjoy sciences and its one of their favorite subjects in school. We love finding family science projects to do together and this one has been so much fun! My kids are ages 6 and 10 and both were very excited about this. We had the geodes placed on a flat surface and whoever was waring the Google was the one to crack it open. There were 15 geodes and they all varied in shapes and sizes. Almost all of the geodes we got has a white crystal center in them. We had two that were different and where smooth flat rock inside or a clear looking crystal gem. Some of the geodes were hard for the kids to crack open and ended up being broken into several pieces each. Although they didn't come out as planned for some they still look amazing and are very interesting to look at. My kids have never seen geodes before and having them up close in person has been a great unforgettable experience for them. With the three stands included we have picked out the best looking ones and have placed them above the fire places.

I love this kit! Not only do you get 15 decently sized “rocks” but you also get safety googles and magnifying glass to look the part too (my kids were really excited about the safety glasses). The book that identifies your potential geodes is done really nicely, it was lovely reading the science behind geodes to my kids to get them excited about whacking them with a hammer. We got a quartz with our first one and it’s beautiful! Can’t wait to crack the rest open!
