A: Simply align the lid with the two metal columns and push down from the top. Once the lid is properly installed, push it up until you hear it lock into place.

I don’t know how good the trash can is( so I don’t want to ruin the function review , hence the 4 star) but I will return it because it turned out to have a plastic body. You’d think the description would tell you somewhere that the trash can is white plastic!

After 20 months the pedal stopped opening the lid after the hinges in the cover broke. The hinges are just brittle plastic and there is no way to replace or repair after they shattered. However, this is no different from other step-on trashcans I have examined. This can is lightweight and gets pushed back toward the wall with each use. There is no removable internal liner, making it inconvenient to really get clean. On the plus side, the can fits nicely into deep narrow spaces between counters. It holds the bag quite securely and regular tall kitchen bags work just fine. It keeps odors in pretty well. And it looks very attractive. Worth $69? I can't decide. There is a 5-year manufacturer's warranty but I don't know how long it takes to get a replacement.

Doesn’t take up a ton of space, but holds so much. We haven’t had any cracks or issues at all. It looks great and the bags are easy to load into the can, and they stay in place. The price is amazing for the quality.

I couldn’t figure out how to snap it together. There is no internal bin so If a mess happens you have to wash the whole thing out. Returned it and found a much better option elsewhere. Annoyed with this product.

We’ve had this trashcan for a month now and I didn’t know a nice trashcan existed. You just snap on the top and it’s ready to go. Bags do not get stuck in there and it closes well enough that ants on the counter weren’t attracted towards the trash can. Also my medium sized dog isn’t able to knock it over. Just get it worth the $.

I purchased two other slim trash cans that were very frustrating to operate. Every other time I stepped on the pedal the lid would flip off and the bags would often fall into the can. This one from simplehuman is engineered very well and is a joy to use!

I really like this new trash can! I wasn’t sure if 40L would be a good size, but it is fine for 2 people in the house and would be fine for 4 as well. The slim size is perfect for my kitchen. And does not extend too far into the room from the wall. Very happy with it!

I don't know how many different kitchen trash cans I've tried over the years, but I'm 100% sold on this one! Finally, one that fits all my needs! First of all, the fact that it's simplehuman means that it has trash bags that fit exactly. That's obviously so helpful. Next, it has a rimmed lid that holds that bag in place. Part of that lid is the section that opens with the foot pedal. It closes slowly, automatically. I used to keep my cans under the kitchen sink and as a result they were never large enough. So I picked another spot in my kitchen for the can. I specifically got this size, which I was afraid might be too big, but it's perfect. It's easy to open the entire lid to remove the bag. Everything with this can seems so effortless!! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because when the can arrives, the lid isn't attached in the back - you have to attach it. I'm pretty capable at that kind of thing, but it took me many frustrated attempts before I got it right. (There were no instructions in the carton.) So I suggest, in the future, simplehuman ship this can already assembled. But other than that, I give it 5 thumbs up!

We like the shape of this can and the overall look is easy to live with. The reason for not rating it at 5 stars is because the can scooches backwards when stepping on the foot pedal. For that reason, we needed to place it against a wall. If someone were to step very gingerly, with care, every time, it might not happen. In our home, we tend to move swiftly when discarding trash.
