Krups 12 Cup Drip Coffee Maker, Simply Brew

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Krups Simply Brew Thermal Carafe, 12-Cup review. Model KM209D50. Origin: China. Lightweight black plastic coffee maker (4 lbs) plus heavier steel thermal carafe (nearly 2 lbs) looks professional, streamlined and compact on countertop. Capacity stated as 12 cups but goes by a measurement of 1 cup = 4.33 oz according to the manual. A standard coffee mug is 12 oz and a Pyrex measuring cup is 1 cup = 8 oz, while different coffee manufacturers have inconsistent directions such as 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 oz. The actual capacity is something like 4 and a third refills of a 12 oz mug, which is suitable for a family of four. The side showing the water level does not include ounces, and with the odd definition of a “cup” (4.33 oz) there is unnecessary calculations to make which involved for me pen and paper. This is my chief issue with the coffee maker, the lack of standard measuring. My other issues include how the touch screen buttons are hard to see (black on black) and not sensitive to touch. I have grown frustrated a couple times. I desired this Krups coffee maker to give to my senior parents who are not tech savvy. I find the measuring system (explained), the touch screen buttons, and also the somewhat convoluted interface hard to explain to them. They have since defaulted to their French press. I am now the primary user of the coffee maker now. Since it’s usually only me, I enjoy the “small batch” feature which is stated as for “four cups” which is actually about 1.5x 12 oz coffee mug’s worth. Fine for an individual. My issue is the function involves pressing two buttons Strength>Progression then cycling through the three levels of strength until I get to “Small Batch.” I would rather have this as one convenient button. The thermal carafe is great for keeping coffee warm for hours. Similar to a Hydroflask. I like that I can unplug the coffee maker and still expect hot coffee. However, this comes with the disadvantage of resetting the clock, which is a function I now ignore. I have also not used the timer function. The thermal carafe seems well designed with a lock/unlock lid. It’s press to pour which is a good safety feature. However, the narrow opening design of the carafe makes it difficult to get the last drops out, and the carafe is on the heavy side (not recommended for seniors). I end up taking the lid off so that it pours out faster, which causes a mess as then all the coffee goes through the lid instead of the spout. Perhaps there is a method I don’t know yet (pressing the lever?). But anyway, since i usually make single serve coffee, the carafe design becomes a bit of a pain. It’s fine for large quantities though. In short, I do not recommend the Krups coffee maker for seniors or for those wanting to make small batch coffee. It’s too tedious. The overall functionality of the coffee maker is fine though. It works, looks good, keeps coffee hot, brews fast. It also plays a pleasant beeping jingle that can be turned on/off. One aspect I do enjoy is the reusable coffee filter and how the coffee filter housing can be removed as well. It’s sometimes an awkward fit to put back as they both rest on top of a spring. But not inconvenient. It’s great to be able to wash the two elements (the coffee filter has a handle) and keep adding coffee tidy. One final thing I’ll note is that the plastic lid opening and closing the coffee maker is a bit flimsy plastic. I am careful with it.

It holds a lot of coffee as well so I don’t need to brew more than one pot. I also appreciate that you can program it to have your coffee ready when you wake up in the morning. It’s a huge timesaver when I’m in a rush in the mornings. 10/10

I love how I don’t have to wake up and start making coffee and having to wait on the coffee to finish brewing. I’ve sit a timer on my coffee maker to make my coffee for me at that time. All I needed to do was make sure the tank had plenty of water and there’s coffee in the filter. I love hot coffee and it’s at the perfect temperature when it’s finished. It’s so easy to clean. It has a sturdy insulated carafe that kept coffee warm for hours. It offers programmable brewing which is very handy. The brewer also has a basket filter and does not need paper filters to brew.
