Q: Does the finished product actually type anything?

submitted by endofaugust83 - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi there! The Typewriter set doesn't actually type once built. However, it does feature a center typebar that rises each time a letter key is pressed, linked to a carriage that moves across as you 'type', plus a platen roller that you can feed real paper into! - Jane, LEGO® Customer Service

    Horrible building experience

I was super excited to finally get this set until I started building it. It was all going fine until assembling the bottom part of the typewriter. It was extremely flimsy and would not connect well. Later, while attaching other parts the entire bottom fell apart and was impossible to put back together. Other parts such as the front piece under the space bar and other parts that are under the space bar were continuously falling apart. Ultimately, building this set brought me to tears and made me want to stop building legos entirely.

My set was missing all the letters except the top row. To say this was annoying is an understatement. I had to wait a week for everything to come in and finish it. For the price I expect more.

Ye olde timey typewriter is a delight

I am going to start off with talking about how it plays, the kids love it, it functions a lot like an actual typewriter: the keys click properly triggering a little key to lever up to the page; the carriage moves back and forth and paper cycles through it fairly easily; and both my kids have sat at the table typing out letters on it 🤣, even adults have wanted to play with it because it looks so inviting. The build was suitably lengthy, I spent quite a few hours putting it all together and enjoyed the build. There are lots of interesting techniques, plenty of complex technic elements and system pieces. None of it is flakey or delicate, with the sole exception of the carriage turn lever which is there for show and meant break away easily if pushed. The notepad it comes with was great, the kids have liked ‘typing’ in lots of different languages. For someone who likes writing and works all day at a keyboard, this makes me nostalgic for something I’m too young to remember, but enjoy immensely anyway. The library had one when I was little, even though there was a computer at home. Prior to this, the longest I’d spent with a typewriter was at Shakespeare and Company in Paris’ Latin Quarter or a rainy winters day. No idea what I wrote, I left it behind pinned to the board. This is going to be on a low shelf, where little hands can reach it and feel the clicky clack of an old typewriter and get excited about times not too long gone.

Wow, this was most difficult for me. It took me three times to get all the arms for each letter in its proper place. This is necessary in order to type each letter. So life like that my granddaughter thought it was real and wanted to type a letter! This is a keeper for future generations and investment.

Pathetic. If your quality control is so poor that you send sets out with fundamental pieces missing... at the very least expedite the replacements!

My grandson has been doing Lego since he’s been like five he has already done a roller coaster. He has done trucks with the hydraulic lift and he absolutely loves Legos and this is who the gift is for. My grandson would appreciate it if you could let me list him as 10 years old, but I had to lie on the form and say that he was 16 thanks for not keeping this real

This set is incredibly unforgiving. I followed the instructions to a T but for whatever reason, the rod that the buttons are suppose to hit is uneven so none of the buttons are able to function as they should. As I was building the back of the typewriter and was moving but with only the letter A. Now it doesn’t work at all. Really frustrating considering the price and how tedious it was to build it. Really wish it worked but just can’t figure out what’s going on with it.

What a wonderful set, won't get the opportunity to build this for some time, but having watched the reviews from others, it pushed me to get this. It is a gift, and one I'm delighted to give due to the size and function of it, and a smashing set to display for them.

This typewriter is really remarkable….so why did I give it only one star? …. I wouldn’t wish this build on my worst enemy. Let me first say that I’ve built dozens of Lego sets over the years. Every bird, dragon, plant and flower that Lego offers (could we have more orchids in different colours please). Space ships, Mars Rover, the giant Millennium Falcon (plan to build a coffee table around it). A whole streets worth of buildings on a 10ft shelve, and that is only a sampling of my Lego addiction. I’m not a Lego newbie. But this set took me down. This set caused tears…..and…..I’m not going to lie…..bad words to come out of my mouth on multiple occasions. Why am I weeping and swearing at my Legos you might ask? THE WORST SET OF INSTRUCTIONS I HAVE EVER ENDURED. I always build my Legos from the Lego Build App. For many sets the App offers you a choice between a .pdf of the book or a 3D version of the instructions. Only the .pdf version was offered for this set. As you can guess this build is very intricate and tolerates no mistakes. I found that assembling the smaller sections into the whole was pure guesswork. The angle of the view in the .pdf caused critical information for placement to be covered up by something already built in front of it. Then guesswork causes second guessing, mistakes and back stepping. The whole build was beyond stressful (remember the tears and bad words). I don’t know why the 3D version was not offered for this set, or the .pdf could have offered views from a couple different angles instead of one, either would have solved the problems. So here I sit, finally calm now, looking at this really cool typewriter and asking the universal question…… where I’m going to put it. Play Well
