Q: Does this shut off automatically when the collection cup is full or will it overflow and you need to pay attention?

Great hands-free pump

Reviewer2345 - 2 months ago
It makes such a huge difference using a hands-free pump! I have been using this pump for the past week and find myself pumping longer because I don't have to sit in one place. I went with the Medela hands free pump after reading reviews online including positive reviews about less pump parts to clean and because I rented a Medela pump from the hospital and have a Medela pump through insurance. I like that some pump parts are compatible with my other Medela pumps and this is by far my favorite. I am 6 weeks postpartum.

Touchscreen issues

2 out of 5 stars
Kriskc - 2 months ago
originally posted on medela.com
Only great feature about this was that its handsfree. It's too bulky on me to comfortably hold my baby if needed, but luckily it can be worn one side at a time. You also can not bend forward while wearing since there are open holes at the top which is a problem when you have to reach down to pick up your baby or are trying to complete household tasks. The biggest issue is that the touchscreen would randomly stop working and sometimes it would change the setting on its own going from a level 2 to and 8 which was not pleasant especially when the screen to turn it down freezes at the same time.

Super durable pump

This breast pump is my favorite! I love the hands free discrete cups you can pump anywhere with modesty. I was absolutely devastated when my husband drove off with it on the roof of the car and it went flying off at 50 miles per hour. We pulled over found it and miraculously it still worked! It’s a little scratched up but I still use it almost every day and pump! Thank you for making good quality products for sleep deprived parents!

Very Glitchy & Not Enough Sizes

2 out of 5 stars
HMW8898 - 3 months ago
originally posted on medela.com
I put this breast pump on my registry and received it as a gift, however I so wish I would’ve chosen a different brand. My issues with it begin with the fact that it: 1. Has an open spout at the top so you can’t bend over since it doesn’t close. Also makes for storing milk while pumping on the go more complicated since you can’t just keep it in the pumps themselves. 2. The touch screen is so ridiculously sensitive if it brushes against your leg or hits the counter, it might pause or change settings on you. 3. Wasn’t a fan of the wrist strap motor design…kinda takes away from it being hands-free because it’s swinging everywhere and the tubes aren’t that long so if you set it down you’re on a short leash. 4. There are only breast shield sizes available above 21mm, which is actually pretty large. If you need anything smaller, you have to order some 3rd party inserts which in my experience make the pump less effective. 5. Worst of all, it recently started glitching. I’ve only had it for 2 months and it will suddenly stop out of nowhere with full battery and the buttons will become unresponsive. Right now it has full battery but won’t work unless it’s plugged in - which completely defeats the purpose of it being a hands free pump. I will say, my two positives are that, they are easy to clean because of the small amount of parts and, when it is functioning normally, it DOES get milk out pretty effectively. I’d say equivalent to, if not slightly better than a standard Spectra S2 pump which has a large hospital grade motor. I’m hoping I can get a refund or at least replacement or something since it seems to be dying on me after only 2 months of use.

Missing a very important feature

There is no way to lock the touch buttons. This wouldn't be an issue if the pump wasn't marketed as "hands-free" and wearable. With no lock on the buttons it is hardly wearable - they are way too easy to press with any body part, and even trough clothes. My solution is to use an antistatic bag from an old hard drive, it spoils the looks but prevents accidental touches. Or if you haven't bought it yet, just go for the classic Swing Maxi motor, which is a bit heavier, but has actual physical buttons. Also, the bluetooth connectivity is just a gimmick, but sadly that's the age we live in, everything has to be connected and touchscreen. Otherwise the pump is very good and feels solid. If it's as durable as our 10+ year old Swing and the touch buttons don't bother you it's worth the premium price.

The suction is so weak it doesn’t empty me. Called customer service twice and both times they didn’t help but sent new parts. I barely had time to call being a new mom and now more time is being wasted with me not being able to use my hands free pump. Unbelievable. How do they not have a satisfaction guarantee?

Pris - 4 months ago
I'm surprised at some of the bad reviews. Granted I've only used it for 1 week. I pump 4 ounces in 10 minutes, it's amazing. Suction is powerful, I can't even go above level 4. The cups fit great and I don't have any spillage. They sit up on the counter and I haven't lost any milk at all. So easy to clean, so few parts. I walk around with it just fine and do a bunch of things without spillage. Just don't lean over, that's true. Can't believe how fast I can get a bottle done and how easy this is. I've used so many traditional pumps before and this is way better. I think people must be using it wrong with these things they're saying. Hope the motor lasts though!

Unreliable - Pump motor died after 1 month

Lauren - 5 months ago, Verified purchaser
Very disappointed - this pump worked well for 1 month despite some of the challenges others mentioned such as milk spillage. However, the motor started randomly turning off after only one month of use. Now it won’t stay on for more than 1 minute and once it dies, you can’t get it back on without plugging it into power, restarting and then the cycle repeats. It also heats up quite a bit and I had one time where the suction randomly jacked up to level 9 (ouch) and I couldn’t press the pause button, had to pull the tubing to stop it and force it off with power button.

These just spill all your milk everywhere

1 out of 5 stars
LizC - 6 months ago
originally posted on medela.com
This is like a first draft product at best. No matter what you do milk is always spilling everywhere. I would say I lose between 1 and 2 oz each time. Then I have to mop the floors, change my clothes, and shower. I loved my Spectra but this is definitely one of the worse breast pumps on the market. Please do not buy this. Cup Design 1) The cups don't sit upright on the counter when you take them off - so you set them down they roll over and the milk spills everywhere. 2) If you lean over (even just a bit) while wearing them milk pours out top because of the way the product holes are aligned. So you really can't walk around or pick up the baby. 3) Because of the way it's designed you cannot see if your nipple is in the center of the tube making it impossible to know if it's properly aligned without taking it off and looking at how the machine is shaping your nipple; but if you so much as touch the product milk goes everywhere. Pump Design 1) You're connected to a cord that must be then worn around your wrist - the cord isn't long enough to pull your shirt down over it so you have to be walking around in just a bra to wear it if you're any taller than 5'0". 2) It's a really, really slow pump - in my Spectra I can get 6 oz in about 12 minutes. With this pump it takes about 30 minutes to get 4 oz even on the highest setting. Which compared to the Spectra HURTS. 3) The unit that attaches to your wrist vibrates like crazy to do the pumping. You cannot set it on the counter as it will vibrate itself off the counter which will disconnect the pump and, again, spill milk everywhere. Of all the babies things I have purchased this was the biggest waste of money. I cannot believe Medela is even selling this. The product designers should be embarrassed. There is no way a mom that has pumped before had anything to do with this design. It feels like it was made by a group of old men that didn't understand breasts.

The only pro about this pump is that it is easy to clean. There are several cons. Constant suction issues, parts break down and need replacing much more frequently than other pumps I have used, most of the parts have to be ordered and are not sold in stores which makes it a hassle when you are an exclusive pumper (always keep a backup pump with this one!), I have had clogged ducts and mastitis more with this pump than any other pump I’ve owned, medela customer service is also extremely low quality compared to spectra. When my spectra pump had issues, they overnighted me a new pump through insurance no questions asked. With medela, it took several days for a response followed by a novel’s worth of troubleshooting tips rather than offering to send a replacement through insurance. I ended up buying new parts out of pocket from their website and it took over a week to arrive. Definitely do not recommend this pump and especially not the brand medela.

Pros: Great suction. Minimal parts. Easy to clean. Cons: super loud, not 100% hands free, bulky and heavy adapter that doesn’t have a clip so it’s hard to put it anywhere when you’re pumping on the run, battery life sucks. Have had it for 4-5 months and just completely died despite it s going two bars of battery life left. This was so $$ and aside from the suction, it’s not worth it.

Bubbs22 - 11 months ago
Absolutely worth the upgrade! I had a traditional plug-in pump with my first, and decided to spring for this one with the second since I knew that having a toddler at home would make it difficult to find time to be chained to the wall for 15 minutes at a time. SO WORTH IT! Can do pretty much anything while pumping. I also love that you don't need any special pumping bra for this - just throw the cups inside a nursing bra or even just a regular bra. Only 3 parts, easy to clean, and the way it's designed there is no risk of milk getting in the air tube, which used to happen with my traditional pump. The fact that I can continue doing pretty much any activity while simultaneously pumping makes this pump worth every penny. I don't think I would have been continue to pump for as long as I have without having that freedom, especially with having a demanding toddler in the home :) Highly recommend!!
