I normally love all things Melissa and Doug. This was so disappointing. It was a pain to build— I later learned this was because there were several faulty pieces where holes didn’t align or were on the completely wrong side. It’s a cute set, but it wasn’t worth the hassle and I hated looking at it in the end.

This product is amazing! My 5 year old saved her money to buy this and she has been in love with it! I wouldn’t have bought it since I thought she was aging out of it but that was what she wanted and even my seven year old is frequently found playing with her! Highly recommend!

I scored this on clearance so super pumped! Super cute and fun. It did take some time to put together-hand screw everything but it was easier than ikea. The correct numbers don’t always pop up on the scanner but my little likes the beeps more than the accuracy. Mine didn’t have a cut at the top so I can’t insert the sign it comes with.

Overall this is a fun interactive toy. My son likes playing with the food and playing check out. It’s cool it comes with so many things to scan. I also like that it adds up the total. It’s nice he can always match the food to the holder. Unfortunately I think the positives can be a tad overshadowed by the negatives. The first box I got was damaged. Where the wooden holders were all cracked where they screw in. The second box was better but still had a small crack on one of them. The scanner is finicky and needs right angle / depth. Which my toddler doesn’t always have the patience for. It also auto shuts off after 5 sec which seems really quick. So a lot of times he’s trying to scan and it just turns off. For the price point I would expect better quality in scanner and wood holders/packaging. It does take 46 screws to put together and is quite a lengthy process. The instructions weren’t awful to follow and I was able to do it with a hand screw. Just be prepared to take your time with it.

This item is cute for kids, but i didn't look at the dimensions, so it was alot smaller than I thought it would be. Definitely kept my child occupied but it did come missing an item to scan (soup) so that was disappointing, considering soup is a favorite food for her in real life.

My 3 yo received this as a gift and I’m disappointed in the quality so far. If I could return it, I would. The scanner glitches a lot and you have to try multiple times to scan the items. We have also not been able to get it to add up like the directions state. Overall, it’s frustrating to him to try to get the scanner to work and scan the items and/or make noise. Disappointed this does not meet the usual Melissa and Doug standards we are used to in toys.

Such a cute concept! However, after taking the time to put it all together and have my kids geek out over it we can’t get the credit card to work when you slide it through! Super frustrating! No instructions about how to make the scanner work either.

There is absolutely nothing I hate more than expensive toys NOT working as intended, ESPECIALLY on Christmas morning. The scanner will not scan anything. My kids totally disregarded this gift as soon as they realized it’s not doing what it was supposed to.

My 4.5 year old son loves his shop mart play set. It was easy to put together with just a screwdriver. It’s a bit of a learning curve figuring out the scanner gun. I love the solid wood pieces, I think this toy will hold up.

This is a great idea, and it has educational value as well. There's different sections of the market, such as veggies, fruits, meats, etc. where the coordinating item goes. This is great for matching skills and hand/eye coordination. Then it's interactive as you hold the scanner to the barcode for each item and then press the plus sign button and it adds up the total. We have kids from 3-12 cousins and neighborhood kids that have really got into playing with this imaginary play. The assembly was just following step by step using a basic screwdriver into wood. I would say about 30 minutes. A nice pretend store for varying ages!

My boys can't get enough of the Shop Mart play set by Melissa & Doug. My kids love to scan things at the self checkout at the grocery store. So, now they have their own compact grocery store, plus it comes with the scanner. They play for hours with this play set. The play set was super easy to assemble and it's very sturdy. I can see my kids playing with this for years to come. I would highly recommend this playset it's, amazing for little ones imaginations.

Despite this toy set being a bit smaller than expected my kids had fun scanning the items with the hand held scanner and totaling everything by pushing the button on top. Placing it on a table makes it easier to reach while standing. We had friends over and even the one year old gravitated to this scanner set almost immediately. The overall quality is great and I expect it to last. The only issue we had was scanning the barcodes. It takes a while to figure out just the right spot to scan the items. The only complaint the kids had was not having enough food in the freezer below the scanner and the bag being too small. Overall, this is super cute and fun. I would say it’s great for under 3.

It's durable, and it looks as you see, and putting it together was easy. I did it all by myself. I bought fake money that looks real, so that doesn't come with it. But it's all nice. And you have to buy the food and other stuff separately. But if you are looking to buy, definitely do it. You don't need fancy tools to put it together. Just need a screw driver, and it comes with the wrench that's need needed. Recommend.

Shopping and grocery toys are very popular in our home. The scanning element of this toy is a nice addition to our collection. The images of the products are cute and colorful. The scanner works well and is easy for a small child to hold. I wish there were a few more accessories other than the scanner and the small bag because the rest of the toy is more one-dimensional. There are so many parts to assemble out of the box and the toy isn't dynamic enough to require all of that, which is why I took off a star.
