Q: Are there options if you do not have six inches of space from the top edge of the stair? Can I still use this gate?

A: Hello, this gate will fit openings 24 to 40.5 inches wide. It's a swing gate and so the opening size would be however wide the opening you have it in is.

A: Has to be screwed into the wall. Pressure mounts gates require a bar across the floor.

A: No, only swings one direction (for safety since at the top of the stairs it should never swing over the stairs.

This gate does the job but it only swings one direction and it’s loud and clunky when closing. I plan to return this gate. Not pleased with it.

This gate was easy for my husband to install at the top of our stairs and is very sturdy. Can open with one hand easily, but you do have to lift and move it in a slightly awkward position, but truly I got used to this within a day. I trust the safety of this at the top of the stairs and am very happy with the purchase. It also has a good streamlined look and not too bulky as it is very visible in our living area.

The gate was easy to install and I had it up in no time. The door on the gate is east enough for my 10 and 6 year old to open but not my toddler. This mom can finally rest easy knowing her child is safe. I highly recommend.

I don't have to worry about my kids falling down the steps anymore and can do what I need to without hovering over them. The gate is good quality and very easy to use. We’ve only used this gate for a few days but so far so good. I like that you can really mount it to the walls for stability

My son tries to climb it so it has proven to be sturdy and holds up well to kids. I can take it down and move it with ease, it fits in every standard doorway in my house.

I have 5 animal like children and it's withstood all 5 of them PLUS my wreck it Ralph like fiance. That's pretty study in my book. Right out of the box it took me about 10 minutes to mount the gate. So far, it has proven to be very sturdy and has been able to get our dogs out of the area we don’t want them in!

Love it. Opens and closes / latches easily. Seems secure for child until they can reach latch up top and be clever. You must put your thumb on the latch and lift the gate a bit. Easier than it sounds and looks. Easy to do one-handed while carrying. We had attempted installation of several others which got returned, until we hit this one. Yay! Feels solid, too. Took a bit to install, mostly us being careful about where to drill 4 holes on each side. The only installation gotcha is the top hinge will need a bit of clearance for a "final adjustments" step's clip to go on it ("wall mount hinge snap female") so attach it / test before drilling. Removing gate is easy and fast and the remaining hardware on the wall looks fine.

So, I thought this was fairly easy to install (but I'm pretty handy) and I can definitely open it one-handed, unllike the other reviewer. Cam in fine shape, and doesn't seem terribly flimsy.
So why two stars? Because my 14-month old child can also open it easily, with one hand. It's a TOP OF THE STAIRS gate, and it cannot be trusted to prevent an adventurous child from taking a tumble down the stairs. I learned this, thankfully, while asking him if he wanted to go get breakfast, and he just reached up with one hand like he had done it a thousand times before, opened the gate, and looked back at me for permission to continue.

make sure to pre drill holes or get new screws. The heads on the screws included snapped off as soon as i started tightening them. Also now where on the product description on this site does it mention that this gate cannot be used with rounded posts. The bottom of my posts are square but would not fasten correctly on the center part of the post for the top. If it was listed under the description for the product that it will not work, I would not have bought it.
