Manual meaning run by people power, pushing it back and fourth over your carpet or floor. It's super light weight, and great for spot checking carpets, but lesser known is that it is also good for hard floors! The soapy water is released by a trigger on the handle, it's a small amount that comes out so as not to saturate the carpet with to much water. Then you work the unit back and fourth over the carpet, allow it to dry then vacuum over the dry spots. It works very well for such a small light weight unit! When it comes to oil, you will do well to get something that is specifically meant to get out oil stains (if its motor oil or the like). It functions when the handle is extended so the trigger can be compressed and a controlled amount of water is released onto the carpet (or floor).
